I'd take John over Saga based on last season alone. Saga didn't do much when he was available which wasn't often. John is a proven goalscorer in this league and banged them in for us last year. There is no point leaving him on the bench. He is good at holding the ball and distributing it to players running on but I concede his workrate is suspect...he is getting on a bit. Start him off until he's whacked out like last year or bring him on with 30 mins to go, regardless of the score, with fresh-ish legs. Selling Davies was a big mistake.

Surely its about time Jan P dropped McG as he is not benefitting the team at the moment. Firstly to shake him up and drop the attitude and secondly to really have a look at these loans we have, i.e. Peckardt and Robertson, alongside an experienced player, i.e. S John. What is the point of having them in the squad if you don't use them to pep up the competition for places?

Its all a conspiracy....not. ITV never show much of Saints games on the highlights at the weekends. Sky seem to enjoy showing us away from home (no figures to back that up though) but maybe we expect a defeat because we've become conditioned to expect it from following Saints all these years. We do have a crap away record compared with many teams.

Point taken on the phraseology. The "Who he?" was more of a Private Eye type headline rather than the potentially negative "Who's he?" as you rightly say. I agree with the sentiment that we need some more competition up front especially for McG who seems to be having the usual ego trip associated with youngsters once they get picked for a regular run in the team. Maybe there's not a whole lot out there about this kid. As long as he's not just here to make up the numbers and cost us cash then the addition is welcome. I saw the article which suggested JP wanted rid of Nathan Dyer because he was not motivated (or the reverse logic that this kid is) so maybe that's the root cause of the swap.

Pardon me SD but I didn't write him off at all in opening up this thread, the premise is even handed and a debate opener. 3 responses in and you've assumed everyone is slagging him off. I was hoping for some enlightenment on the quotes made in the press and any more details on the player so that people can maybe form an opinion. Forums do allow opinions don't they?

Jan apparently tried to sign him when he was coaching in The Netherlands. What was the motivation. Apparently he hasn't set the world alight on loan spells. Maybe someone can shed some light on this shrewd (or crude) decision.
