  1. A good topic for a new thread?! How elaborately would you top yourself?! "Let me die a young man's death" etc.. Agree that jumping off a bridge is a crap way to go ...
  2. Wow - well done you - you know your Saints history! The caption is "The 1948-9 team which finished third in the Second Division". The book from which I got the photo was published in 1960... A couple of quotes from nearly 50 years ago: "The Dell is a ground rather on the small side and not easily adapted for expansion" "In April 1949 in a League match against West Bromwich Albion it held 30,586 people, while there was an attendance 30,380 at the Cup-tie with Sunderland in January 1937" "Several players connected with Southampton have gained fame; G. Molyneux, A. Turner and J.W. Robinson of older times; R.W.M Rowley, Tom Parker, Alf Ramsey and W. Ellerington more recently"
  3. OK - here's a teaser for the "more mature" of our supporters... I have a team photo in front of me featuring the following players - what was the year? Smith, Ramsey, Black (GK), Rochford, Wilkins, Webber, Mallett, Ellerington, Scott, Curtis, Wayman, Bates, Grant
  4. Why are police in Bitterne appealing for witnesses? It's blooming miles away from there, no? And sad as the news is for the poor bugger, I do love journalese - why did he "plunge" from the bridge? Didn't he "fall" or "jump"?
  5. Economic Left/Right: 1.25 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -2.51 So a liberal righty??
  6. Billy Gibbons Robert Cray Already been mentioned but also class: Clapton Hendrix Gary Moore Also would add George Harrison - much under-rated as a guitarist...
  7. Is the Potter's Heron (not sure about the apostrophe there!) still going? Back in the day it was considered "dead posh" - my nan was a silver-service waitress there (NOT just a "waitress" but a "silver-service waitress" lol!). I think it was a favourite place of Lawrie Mac's and they had the press conference for Keegan's signing there? Maybe a complete melt-down of my faculties, but I have memories of my nan getting Keegan's autograph on a napkin from that day...
  8. Not an Ex-Saint (yet) but Gillet seems to have made a good first impression at Donny Rovers....
  9. Actually Alps one of the (minor) things that swung my decision to accept a move from Lausanne to Amsterdam was the thought of being able to watch some decent TV!! Another 6 months of BBC b*****d Prime, or BBC f*****g World and I would have topped myself!! It cannot be beyond the whit of the BBC to produce a decent package of programmes for the average British ex-pat family surely?
  10. Jonny Lewis and Rational Rich - well done to you! Quick question - I only managed to follow the game on here via chinese whispers from the radio reports (check the first half comments) and it seemed Jaidi had an off day and we were a bit fortunate at times - was this your reading?
  11. What was the name of the club/wine bar behind Woolies in the early eighties?
  12. AND! Fester and the Vomits Bob Pearce Blues Band Friday's was a good shout! What was the Italian restaurant (when Italian food was "exotic" - La Lupa or something?)

  14. Left over 20 years ago... Memories? Was a Merry Oak boy myself (long gone, I think?)... Thornhill Towers, where my nan lived - have they been pulled down yet? Replays - best record shop! Southampton Zoo - with the chimp who used to smoke the lit cigarettes thrown at him... Cowherds where you could get a pint at 15 years old! Prinny's in Bevois Valley Prince Regent in Swaythling Martines (in Eastleigh?) My uncle owned the "Admiral Cunningham" pub in Fareham - rough as **** The Physik girls... The Buchanan girls... (sigh) Happy days!
  15. It's a difficult one, isn't it? We could easily add Mark Hughes, an internationally-renown striker, but rubbish for us in that position and ended up as a midfielder...
  16. Me too - I'm an old f*rt so I don't go in for "resting" the players.. 3 games in 7 days? Well ease up on the training a bit then... Players always say they'd prefer to play every game. We haven't been together as a team for that long, so the more they play competitively, the more understanding they'll build up. Mind you, if Lambert gets a knock tonight, I'll be spitting feathers that he was used in a less-important game - fickle, moi?!
  17. I think AP has already said that there won't be many changes - he wants to create a settled side?
  18. Ha! Many a true word said in jest! Just got my 7 year old his first Saints kit last weekend when I was back in the UK... He proudly wore it to training on Monday but came back a bit down as his team-mates (in their Man Ure, Arse and other plastic kits) were taking the mickey. So I sat him down and showed him YouTube clips of Le Tiss and now he's fired up again! Will have to get him over for a game at SMS this season. P.S. Wonder how many boys aged 5-15 in Southampton are called Matthew??!
  19. Some people on this forum need to get a (hair) grip and lightening up - our fringe players have been bobbings this season - we're on the slide. We need a confidence restorer - someone with experience like Jeff Henna would be brilliantine..
  20. The timing of this whole move has a quiff of desperation about it...
  21. I don't think it is anything to worry about tbh. In a recent interview with NC (BBC Solent, perhaps?) I remember him commenting about how he'd been so busy in the last month that his wife and family were complaining? Plus he must have realised by now certain areas where he is out of his depth, knowledge-wise, so makes sense to bring an advisor on board. If I was running the business and feeling overwhelmed, I'd bring in people too. Having said that, if he appoints Dennis Wise then I'm packing it in....
  22. I've just gone through a couple of Chelsea web-sites and Melis was apparently "on the fringes" of the first team - think he'll be more than cover for us, if that's the case?
  23. Well Dan, if you can swing by 'Dam Square on a match day, I'll happily meet you there (Carlisle on a Tuesday night may be a bit of a challenge...)! Anyway, nice sentiments, nipper, welcome to the board and hope you you get a "crew" together!
  24. And where is the llama-monkey zoo we were promised?? And the Princess Diana Towers? Were these simply pipe-dreams to con us ST-holders out of our hard earned cash? There's a recession on, in case Misters so-called ML and AP don't realise...
  25. Speculator/NC19/Whatever... What is indefensible is your implied criticism of MLT, and with that I will brook no argument. Having been around the world several times, I can say from Bogota to Al-Maty to Port Moresby, the one reaction I get when I say I'm from Southampton is "Ah! Matthew Le Tissier!" (in various accents, of course!). The man is a figure-head and a role model, not just for our club, but also for our city, so it's worth remembering. In terms of his role with Pinnacle, only MLT knows the real answer. I'm happy to concede to you that he may have been mislead, but does that make him less of a hero/legend? In my eyes the answer is an emphatic "No" - he remains "Mr Southampton". I'm not sure of the agenda you and Derry have (or how old you both are) but do you remember: 1 - The goal against Newcastle when MLT flicked it up with the back of his heel (and his endearing comment that he "scuffed" the shot!) 2 - The last (competitive) goal at the Dell to beat the Arse 3-2 - still can remember blubbing about that! 3 - His embarrassment with the goal against Taibi (sp?) at Man U? Still funny! On a personal level, Matt once lived next door to my mum, and to encourage my son's support I asked if she could get an autograph from Matt. I would have been happy with a typical squiggle on a standard "Shoot"-type picture - instead I got a personal photo with a lovely, considered message ("F**k off Pompey, I think it was (joke!)) You are entitled to rave and rant about Pinnacle and the delay it caused for the Liebherr takeover, but please refrain from criticizing MLT, Regards, Peter
