Best bit of business Southampton have ever done
BristolRedStripe replied to Crazy Diamond's topic in The Saints
I thought Mark Wright was pretty much unknown and thought of as a makeweeght in the deal which was centred more on Keith Cassells. Possibly the best centre back to play for Saints up to his broken leg in the FA Cup Semi? Fast, great tackler, good in the air and Hansen like composure bringing the ball out of defence. What happened to Keith Cassells though.....? -
Jim Magilton from Oxford.

Liam Fontaine - Update: Deal falls through

A further Bristol City season ticket holder writes: "Unspectacular. Reliable but not outstanding at anything in particular. Dodgy ankle, wouldn't surprise me if he failed the medical. Surprised we've let him go though as defence is our weakness and he's probably the best of an average bunch (tells you a lot about the rest of them)." -

My big concern is the fixation on signing players that have a surname beginning with 'Fo'. Forte, Fontaine, Fox and it's not even down to Nigel as Pardew signed Fonte. Has NC, in all his purse string wisdom, got a good deal on supplies of those two letters for the back of shirts and the resulting economies of scale will put us on a sounder financial footing? Where will it all end? -
Liam Fontaine - Update: Deal falls through

My mate's take as of yesterday. "Fontaine is a good player who could probably benefit from a move, as he's been with us five years or so now. We signed him from Fulham the summer before we got promoted and he's been pretty much a first choice centre back ever since. He's 25-ish, left sided (he can play LB at a push) and is best alongside someone who is better in the air than he is. I believe he's out of contract this summer so despite captaining us on the opening day (he's been out injured ever since, though is back in training) I reckon we might sell." -
(To the tune of Delilah) I saw him wide on the right when he passed by their left back (DA DA DA etc.) I saw his flickering skills as he did it again (DA DA DA etc.) Heeeeee was from Belgium As he deceived them I watched and went out of my mind My, my, my, De Rider Fly, fly, fly, De Rider I can see, him crossing towards Connolly Or cutting inside and teeing up one more for Ricky...

Worked much better for Neil Heaney....
-
He plays at left back well, Right back well, Midfield, centre back, on the wing as well, His name is Jacky Corky and he plays for SAINTS And that's what it's all about..... WHOOOOOAAAAHHHH Jacky Corky WHOOOOOAAAAHHHH Jacky Corky
-
And we like him, we like him, we like him, we like him, we l-l-l-like him, l-l-l-like him, Here he go-oes, Jack Cork all over the field. (To Rockin' All Over The World and referrign to his versatility). Now that would ROCK!!!

The best ever saints game you've ever seen
BristolRedStripe replied to kwsaint's topic in The Saints
Two ding dong games that haven't been mentioned: Saints 4 Stoke 3 in about 1982. Biley was palying for them, Waldron scored a free kick. 3 0 Saints at half time. Stoke come back to 3 3 with Dave Watson scoring a 30 yard screamer for them (really!) and then of all people, Mark Whitlock wins it in the last minute. There was a cracking Saints 4 Ipswich 3 in about 1994 or 5 with an injury time winner I think. -
Going back to A B C...... A.O.C. His Dad played for Stoke City Scored against Luxembourg at Wem-b-ley But then again Luther Blissett got three (perhaps fade out in shame during this last line...)

Exeter season ticket holder friend of mine (knows football and I trust his judgment) says: "Thick. He's not that bad a player but he never gives the impression of thinking about what he's doing and does some really stupid things. Wouldn't pay good money for him though....." Hope he can develop!!
