Be'er Sheva Old City was a dump, Bethlehem pretty lively, as were a few little bits of Jerusalem and there's plenty of armed security everywhere and security checks to get into malls and stations, but overall I'd say it's more relaxed than I'd expected, Tel Aviv is like any affluent city in the world, great place to live I'd imagine.
