Exciting young Saints players who have not made the grade
Ozkeith2 replied to maysie's topic in The Saints
Tony Sealy Tony Funnel Austin Hayes Nicky Banger Ray Wallace Richard Hall Scott macdonald All left us for lower leagues (or, worst still, Scotland) after promising starts. There was a kid with an Irish sounding name who was to be the new Steve Williams, but never got out of the reserves. -
For me, Hammond, Bart & Perry are playing above expectations.

From ML and NC's point of view, this data shows that we have a self-sustaining premiership sized level of support. The Exeter game was further proof. So, we've got the infrastructure and support to match, or even exceed the achievements of Birmingham/ Bolton/ Wigan/ Hull / West Ham etc. All they need to do is (continue to) manage the club wisely, and invest a bit of money (well, maybe 30Mil) over the next couple of years in training facilities (ie: player development) and players AND be patient. As Pards has said, we're a work in progress and it's a 5 year plan to get back to (and be competitive in) the Premier league.

it took us 13 games to escape relegation. In just less than 13 more games, we are exactly mid table (7 points from relelgation, 7 points from play-offs). There will be up ands downs this season - injuries & suspensions will have some impact. (but) We should expect to be in a playoff position after 39 games.

A Great Chance to Steal Aussie Talent on Loan...
Ozkeith2 replied to brightspark's topic in The Saints
The A-league is a bit crap - it's much slower than league 1 - Kevin Muscat (now nearly 40) plays CB for the best team ffs. However, many of the best players are looking for loan-outs or short term transfers in January because the A-league ends in Feb & the national coach has told everyone that they need to be playing regular football to get into the WC2010 squad. By far the best striker in the A-league is Archie Thompson at Melbourne (even after four years in a 10 team league, defences still can't work him out) - he's fit, quite fast & got some skill. HCDAJFU IMO. -
I once saw Danny Wallace in Fridays night club after we'd lost to Liverpool. I told him that we (saints) needed to work harder or we would get relegated. He agreed. I was right. 20 years later we were relegated.

He's one of my all time faves. A real class act. He didn't score many in comparison to his England rivals (Robson, Hoddle), but I still think he could have done a job at international level in '82 or 86. (Bobby) Robson played him out of position against East Germany at Wembley. He missed a sitter early on & that was pretty much it for his England career. Does anyone remember the 25 yard volleyed goal against West Ham?

Should Pardew rest players in JPT game ahead of Leeds?
Ozkeith2 replied to trousers's topic in The Saints
We need to give some of the squad members a run. They will have important (bit) parts to play over the next 25-30 games what with injuries, suspensions, etc. Remember too, Pards was (i think) pleasantly surprised over Perry's performance in the last JPT game & has kept him in the team since. So I think he'll play Thomas, Trots & Melis (if they're not going in Jan), Wotton & maybe Mills or Holmes. Pard's will expect whatever team he puts out to play to our current standard and achieve a result. -
I suspect he won't be the only one who goes if we don't win promotion. We have some good players - some of the best in this division - many of whom could do a job at a higher level. Of course, the up-side of having so many good players is that we'll probably make the play-offs.

Come on guys - pints of tetley isn't that bad compared to the "mid strength" p*ss water they serve at games here in australia.
-
We're still going to have some ups & downs through the season. It's a long journey. But: 12 games to get off the bottom 12 games to get clear of relegation 12 games for mid-table security and the rest to make the play-offs ! Coyr!

Assuming we're building a quality team that will easily avoid relegation, and assuming we are too far behind to get promoted this season, How can we seamlessly continue our progress next season?, can we avoid losing our quality players in Jan/ Summer (Hammond, Harding, Lambert, Lallana etc) to better (ie: higher placed) teams and risk a costly (points and money) re-rebuild?

Just visited UK from Australia. My son is a Manure fan, & we were able to "buy" ST's for the Sunderland game. It seems people buy ST's as investments & rent them out thru' a semi-official agency. Sadly, this meant I missed the Gill's game. Though i did get to see the great man on Sky Sports & saw the Yeovil, Carlisle & Rovers games. Anyway, my point is that it seems that all clubs 'allow' the transfer of ST's.

Just got back to Melbourne. Saw Yeovil, Carlisle, & Bristol Rovers (w-d-l). Missed the gillingham (had to go to Old Trafford) and southend games. It was great to get back - my first times @ St Marys - & catch up with mates and renew the faith. Pints of Tetley available at the ground - miles better than the p#ss water at Etihad. Bought most of the contents of the saints shop. Happy with what Pards is doing, and i think we're too good to get relegated - Harding, Hammond, Lambert, Jaidi, Trotman are shrewd signings. Not sure that we'll make the play offs though, which means we may lose some of our better players in Jan/ Summer & have to rebuild again (it's taken Leeds a few years). I agree with earlier comments on here - even League 1 is a better standard than the A-League - so much faster!. COYR, oh, and Victory.

It's freezing down here in Melbourne (well, 10 degrees). Good Luck with the heat TP - It took me 10 years to get used to the hot summer (30+) days, and that's down here. The humidity in Bris/ QLD can be a killer in the summer - Fowler will melt !.

Ashamed to admit I had a holiday fling with a skate bird in Ibiza many years ago.

If you've never bought a(n internet) ticket & therefore don't have a customer number I don't think they're issuing any more. This is they reply i got when I emailed for help: Your best option would be to call the booking line on 0800 28000 50 once you arrive in the UK and just collect the tickets from the ground on the day of the game.

I think that as time passes, you only remember the good bits (& maybe some really, really horrible bits). For Me, our best ever left midfielder was Nick Holmes 'cos when I think back, I can only remember the chip from halfway vs Watford in the league cup and the league cup final goal (not the same season, we lost a 4-0 first leg lead to Watford).
-
Let's give Pards some time. First, he has to see what he's got Second, the window does not close for while yet third, We have to fix our defensive frailties (1-0 at home & 0-0 away would get us into the play offs, even with at -10 start) Fourth, We do not want to waste money on a 'maybe'
-
He didn't really ever wear a Saints shirt 'cos he was the goalie. IMO Tim Flowers was our greatest ever - he kept us up for a few seasons (with a little help from the great one). I recall Eric Martin (GK from the early '70's) always wore a saints shirt under him 'keepers shirt - was he always hopefull that Ted would play him upfront one day? (like my under 13's keeper).
-
This is a joke of a thread. However, Ex-Fergie United players often appear to manage quite successfully, especially in the lower divisions (Keane, Ince, Strachan & a few others). Who's available?, Ince?. Perhaps, it's an attractive semi-retirement (from playing) role for Giggsy?

It's costing Me fifteen grand!. I am coming from Melbourne though!. The wife's family come from near there (Whitehaven). Does Cumbrian Saint know if the 'Oily Johnnies' pub still exists?. People here don't believe there's such a place.
