  1. Quite right James...:@) On a serious note I do agree. Whether we manage to sign him up is another question altogether, but I just don't share the view that he'd be a terrible influence on the dressing room. He can score goals at this level without any trouble, all he needs to do is prove his fitness IMO. If he's fit and a deal can be agreed then only an idiot would turn him away.
  2. On the contrary...he wasn't popular at all when he joined, he played at the start of 05-06 when he clearly wasn't fit enough (and looked thoroughly miserable), and as a result he never ever won the fans around. Of course he scored some goals towards the end of that season, but the damage had already been done. I'm sure he's come out and said as much to the press a little while ago? Can't remember precisely what he did say, but it wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of our club.
  3. FWIW I think we as fans do shoulder a fair bit of the blame because (as a whole) we just do not really appreciate technical skill and artistry in this country. We love it being played at 100 miles an hour, seeing players getting stuck in, smashing the ball in from 45 yards etc. That's what gets us excited. Passing the ball around patiently between teammates results in the crowd getting on the players backs and demanding they "f***** get in with it". It's always been that way and I can't see it changing for quite a while to be honest. It really highlights how lucky we were to have Le Tiss in our team for so long...
  4. Agree 100% actually!
  5. And Malcolm Elias also works at Fulham as well... http://www.fulhamfc.com/Club/News/NewsArticles/2009/July/AcademySigning.aspx Presumably if one was s**** and the other was good, they wouldn't exactly have been falling head over heels to work with each other again?
  6. Bias aside, I don't see them doing much more than mid-table to be honest. They have got a lot of experienced players in the team, and they certainly get stuck in alright (quite a few tasty challenges yesterday), but I don't think they have a huge amount to offer. Put it this way, I'm not worried about them this year! :@)
  7. Still on for a 138 point season...:@)
  8. Well...he definitely did sign for Pompey as he was there playing at Ashton Gate yesterday! My mate is a Bristol City fan and asked if I fancied going ...shame it wasn't the best game to watch. Anyway, the 5mins he was on the pitch was very good indeed. Two excellent dribbles and a cross which just missed Benjani. Not bad for such a short debut.
  9. Pff. Not even 70% win ratio yet. I expect much more from him.
  10. It is very good. We've always had a great youth set-up but it's nice that we are finally getting some recognition for it in the national media. We haven't IMO had anywhere near enough credit for the work that has been put in over the years. It all bodes well for our ambitions and I don't think there is any better way of achieving things in football than with home-grown talent.
  11. I think a fair value for him at the moment would be around £8m (that doesn't make him an inferior player to AOC, I just think that's more realistic to the crazy money Arsenal paid). Having said that he isn't for sale anyway and I doubt we would even contemplate bids less than £15m - and rightly so. I hope he stays with us and keeps developing with the rest of the team. He has a little way to go yet but he has the ability to be capped by England, there's no two ways about that. He's obviously happy to be at the club at the moment and with any luck that will remain the case for a long time yet.
  12. Maybe I'm a bit mad but I think it is quite an affectionate, tongue-in-cheek song. After all, we're all pleased that he's back in the team playing rather than being on the sidelines? That said, he clearly hates it and so it would be best if it was stopped. Don't want him to stop scoring!

Interesting. In some ways it would be nice for him to come back and help play a part in trying to get us promoted. He didn't exactly leave the club on a high when he moved to Everton.

If he is fit and hungry to play then I would love to have him back. Why? Because age simply is not a barrier in the Championship. Look at KP for example, he's just turned 38 and scored a brace this weekend. He's not had the best couple of years, but at the end of the day he has more than enough quality to add something to our squad. David Connolly has barely scraped 50 appearances anywhere in the last four years, but we've kept him because he is quality - simple as. To suggest he's past it because he's 33 is bonkers really.
  15. I've said all along that I think we will surprise a few people this year, but we will just have to see how things pan out. I certainly feel a lot happier that the Oxo saga is now resolved and that we are continuing to strengthen the team. But the Championship is full of teams who can play blinding football one week and then be so utterly s**** the next it leaves you feeling stone cold! Overall though I think we are a good bet to be in contention for the playoffs at the very least.
  16. Would be a shame if he doesn't get to play for us at all in the Championship, but it's his choice I guess. I suppose you only get one shot at most things in life, so I hope for his sake that he doesn't regret whatever decision he makes.
  17. I think the only reason there might be some reluctance to take him on is his recent injury record. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/b/birmingham_city/9010764.stm You have to wonder exactly how well his knee has healed; modern footballers are of course more likely to recover from serious knee injuries than they would have done 30/40 years ago, but you never know. Seems a shame from Birmingham's perspective that they couldn't agree on a deal to keep him. Would love to see him join us if we could settle on a decent deal.
  18. I live in a village right in the middle of Devon, and to my horror I saw some bloke delivering leaflets a couple of months back sporting a Pompey top! He looked rough as **** and I crossed the road accordingly. As any decent Saints fan would of course. However a random meeting with a Saints fan was at a small brewery in Yorkshire; the owner had a season ticket I believe. Was mainly shocked to have met a Saints fan in such a remote place!
  19. He has indeed got time on his side, but he needs to get some proper game time. 30 first team appearances (anywhere) over a period of 5 and a half years is not what any of us would have expected when he first broke into the team. Of course I want him to stay because he's a talented player, and in some respects he's the ideal number 2 keeper to have because he seems content enough to accept that role. You have to hope that he's picking up a lot of tips from KD and the rest of the coaching staff, but I just worry that he hasn't kicked on since his knee injury. I think he could do with an extended loan somewhere just so that he can get some experience. It can't be much fun sitting on the bench week in week out can it? Anyway - pleased to see KD has signed up, you can tell he wants to be here and that can only be a good thing.
  20. Apologies - that laugh was for the Perry Groves joke, not just a random laugh!
  21. Hmm...pop a note in your diary to check the league table precisely 3 months from today (by my reckoning that'll be Thursday 13th October. You will find your answer in the table....
  22. This is absolutely spot on. The problem is, in my opinion, that people see football clubs as being financially untouchable, and so they expect them to keep spending and spending more and more. In the current climate though £5m is actually a bit of a snip, although I appreciate that sounds utterly deranged!
  23. Not having a go at Adam Lallana (am sure he's just told to get on with the promo work), but when you read quotes like "I'm pleased to have another Umbro design as they are also worn by the England team, so it shows that we have the best available in the country right now.", you have to chuckle! Football shirts do however always fly off the shelves. Despite people moaning about it costing £40, the quality being poor, blah blah blah, they always sell. All part of the "customer" experience of course :@)
  24. Oh yeah, Uwe was s**** for us but he'll always be a cult hero in my eyes! Anyway, we got him on a free from Tennis Borussia Berlin (great name) so I guess my expectations were never all that high. I kind of figured he wasn't going to be at his Man City best when playing for a club like Tennis Borussia Berlin. No offence to Tennis Borussia Berlin fans out there of course...
