Sweet finish

At least, in terms of the labour market, the most rigorous evidence suggests that discrimination against particular minorities is substantial and hasn't really fallen over time. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/1468-4446.12676

We're starting to exert control. Big ten mins for Norwich.

What happens if you support both the poppy and taking a knee?
-
The article doesn't fully tell the story behind the knee. Originally Kaepernick protested by sitting during the anthem. It was Nate Boyer, a US army green beret and former NFL long-snapper, who advised Kaepernick to kneel as a compromise instead - to protest racism and injustice but also to show reverence to those in the military who had given up their lives for the US flag and anthem. Its more a subtle message than given credit for - and no doubt lost on the usual suspects who view the world in binary and Manichean terms.

Has the feel and atmosphere of a first game at WC.

In other news, I see David Spiegelhalter, the Cambridge statistician and former President of the RSS, now says that the majority of Covid deaths would not have occurred in coming year (perhaps 5-15%) - so the virus isn't simply killing off those that were on their way out anyway. Who would have thought it.

I agree to an extent but I'd also say the Cummings story is a lightning rod for those wider issues - the story wouldn't nearly be as salient if the government's handling of the crisis had been competent. In practice, it juxtaposes the sacrifices that the public has had to make against a shower of a government that has broken its own rules while woefully mismanaging the crisis. A health crisis has transmuted into a political crisis and the first and only instinct of this government is to protect its own tawdry skin and reputation rather than the integrity of a vital health message and the lives that depend on it. That speaks volumes.

The United Kingdom and the Death of Boris Johnson as we know it.

No. -
Because anyone with an ounce of integrity knows its complete horse****.

What’s happened to Les these last few years? I also knew he was a conservative with politely xenophobic views on some issues. But I basically put it down to the world being a bit too fast for him and nothing more. He always reminded me of George from Rainbow –basically a harmless and gentle duffer. He’s still a duffer but he’s gone on all dark, twisted, angry and extreme. It's a disturbing decline and transformation.

This female journo is just toying with him.

Some eyesight test (on your wife's birthday at the picturesque Barnard Castle)- dear oh dear

As Jenny Harries clarified yesterday the guidance is anyone with symptoms must self-isolate immediately unless "there is extreme risk to life". That's an extremely high bar to clear. The list of reasonable excuses appears more relevant to those without symptoms and the circumstances in which they can leave the house. There are conflicting reports whether DC was exhibiting symptoms when he drove up to Durham, though its safe to say his wife was doing so which, in ordinary circumstances, would require the rest of the household to self-isolate. FWIW I was self-isolating for a while and desperately needed antibiotics for a concurrent tooth infection/abscess. It was very painful. I was explicitly told by 111 not to leave the house to pick them up which delayed my ability to start the treatment as I waited for alternative delivery arrangements. That's an insignificant drop in the ocean compared to the substantial sacrifices that other people up and down the country have had to make in putting others interests first.

Fair play to conservative MPs and commentators (the Spectators (well some contributors), Iain Dales, Tim Montgomeries, Julia Hartley-Brewers etc of this world) who know this absolutely stinks.
-
I know for a fact that Labour will be quite satisfied with that.

The Guardian and Mirror are playing a blinder.

You do realise it’s perfectly possible to highlight the effectiveness of the lockdown in London and still be fiercely critical of the government’s handling of the pandemic. They’re not mutually exclusive. It shouldn’t be terribly hard to process (granted it’s you which is a huge caveat). I’ll let it sink in. I’m sure you’ll get there. On another note, I see you’re posting photos now. What with the constant following around, your behaviour is getting odder and more obsessive. You’re clearly not very well.

Considerable enough that’s it longer than someone facetiously asking how the second wave is coming along. There’s your answer and it’s perfectly appropriate in the context of the post I was responding to. Whereas you are desperately trying to shift the goalposts Les. #textbook
-
Yes because I was simply responding to a specific point in a post. And nothing more.
-
Longer than someone facetiously asking how the second wave is coming along given the impact of the lockdown and other behaviorial change on the level and rate of infection. I was addressing that point and that point only.
-
Nope both of you have singularly failed to answer the second and critical point. Childishly saying something over and over doesn’t make it so, though I’m sure my other little fans and stalkers will be weighing in behind you. To repeat, its very simple pal: with a low r and level of infection (for whatever reason but let’s just say the success of lockdown and voluntary social distancing), it will take some time for the virus to build back up in the community and for us to see a second wave, even with some people acting like idiots. In much the same way that trialling vaccines in the community and hoping a participant will be get infected can be frustratingly slow. Do you understand why people are calling for challenge trials?
