Well as a self confessed liberal leftie i think smacking is.....ok. There is a difference between smacking and beating your child. I don't think it should ever be the first choice of discipline or even a regular one but there are certain circumstances where it can be necessary. For example, what if your child ran into or near a road? Do you try and reason with them and hope they understand the dangers or perhaps a short sharp shock that lets them know in no uncertain terms that it isn't acceptable? Anyway it's a personal choice (i have on very rare occassions smacked my daughters bum) and whether you choose to or not, it really isn't anyone else's business how you discipline your own child.

Compared to newer stadia St Mary's is a bargain but was substantially more expensive than both the Riverside in Middlesbrough (£16m) which opened in 95 and Sunderlands Stadium of Light which cost a bargain £23m for 49000 seats!

Well I did say it's a balance between punishment and rehabilitation so someone should always be punished for their crime within the remit of the law (it is after all not Mccormicks fault that he only served 3 and a half years, that was what the judge felt he could impose within the guidelines he is given). Whether that balance is right in this case I guess time will tell, i.e. if he is genuinely remorseful I'd expect to see him quietly going about his job whilst doing lots for the community and trying to spread the messsage on the consequences of drink driving (not just for himself but for victims as well). Remember he isn't a habitual criminal so it's not the same (or at least I'd hope not) as letting out someone who has a load of previous convictions. There should be less risk of re-offending and more chance of trying to contribute something to society. Leave him in prison for longer and you run the risk of him becoming institutionalised, then on release being at the margins of society and that doesn't benefit anyone. FWIW I agree that it is galling that he has walked straight back into a very decent job and I can't imagine what that must be like for that poor family. I have no sympathy for the man, he made a choice to drive whilst drunk and it has cost 2 innocent kids there life but he has served his punishment and he now has an opportunity to do something positive so perhaps he ought to be left to do that.

There is a balance with all crimes in terms of punishment/rehabilitation. You can't keep every prisoner banged up forever so at some point the vast majority will be released back into society, part of the process of being in prison is to rehabilitate the offender so that when they come out they can re-integrate and become a useful, productive, tax paying, law abiding member of society. The alternative is they come out of prison and either commit more crimes or just generally don't contribute and thus becoming a burden on the state and us as taxpayers. So which would people prefer? I'd prefer they contributed something. If Mccormick was left in prison for 20 years what good would that do? It won't bring those boys back and when he eventually came out he'd be far less likely to be of any use to society.

As I wasn't born until 1980 I can't comment on 76 or 78, though 76 has been the clubs shining moment of glory so far which makes it's the clubs biggest achievement but for me as a post 76'er this is at least on par with the 03 cup final. There is potentially more at stake in terms of the future of the club on this game than on a cup final. Having said that if we lose and West Ham go up then the play off semi final first leg will be more important. As for whether the last few years trophies aren't important - for crying out loud we're hardly Barcelona, we can't sniff at any silverware that comes our way! History suggests that we probably won't win a lot else so lets just enjoy it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but as my nan says opinions are like ar*eholes, some are full of sh*t! There are a worrying number of people near me who still want us to lump it forward as if that is the only way to score a goal and as if they have somehow failed to notice how we've played the last 18 months. My mantra has always been that the opposition can't score a goal when we have the ball, an idea that seems lost on some.

Take a point any day of the week. We'll still be top with 3 very winnable games left. If we win, we'll win the league. If we lose I think Reading will pip us but West Ham still won't catch us.

There is a definite difference between smacking a childs bum as a means of discipline and beating your child. My daughter has had a smacked bum on rare occasions, sometimes a little shock can do the trick, though it is an extreme rarity when exceptional or repeated bad behaviour is involved. Like with all the things if you use it all the time it would cease to be effective either as punishment or detterent. This would be true of the cane as well I would guess. I'm not old enough to have seen it's use but I bet there were loads of kids that got caned fairly often, which would suggest to me it isn't that effective. My guess would be that it only be the well behaved kids that really feared it anyway. Like with ASBO's, getting the cane would almost be a badge of honour to some. I think the real route cause of the lack of respect and self discipline in schools stems from parents who either don't possess the skills to parent or can't be bothered to . How on earth you solve that I don't know.

Up - Us, Reading & Brighton. 3 Southern sides in the prem can only be a good thing, plus would LOVE watching the financial imlplosion at West Ham next year. Big Club myar*e! Down - Wigan - years in the prem and still no-one cares about them. Decent manager tho. Wolves - dull, lack ambition. QPR - the poster boys of how not to do things in the prem, signing 'big name' players like some 12 year old playing football manager. Hopefully they'll plummet to League One where they belong. Would be funny to see Blackburn stay up just to see how fans react to Steve Kean after that

Highly doubt he would get a start, bench possibly but that would be harsh on Martin who has been decent back-up. Plus, doesn't Seaborne say in the interview on the OS that he has another game coming up as part of his recovery program? I took that to mean the development squad and not the first team. I think he is a way off first team duties, not 'Saints Fit' yet.

Amazing night! At the start I was just hoping to nick a point and accepted that one off Wham or Reading would win. The actual outcome is mental! 4 wins and we are there. Wham need to get 8 more points than we do from now on in. With our respective forms I just can't see that happening so top two looks really good, beat Reading at home and say hello to the championship trophy!!!

I really don't think the prem is all that. However, as others have said, we need to go to keep hold of our better players, invest more in the academy and keep hold of the best ones that come through and most importantly we need the £££'s in the prem to do all this whilst being financially stable. I hope that we would follow Swansea's pattern of playing good football and being positive in our outlook rather than doing what at least half the teams do - try to eek out 40 points, bank the money and do the same the next season. We won't win the prem but maybe in 5 years, and with a bit of good fortune (i.e one of the big clubs financially imploding!), we could challenge for a champs league place. I would be happy with mid table obscurity for a few years as long as we gave both cups a right good go. They are both there for the taking as virtually every team prioritises the league.

It's been an unbelievable achievement so far. Money has played a massive part but it has for the most part been spent well. Look at Leicester for how not to do it. Trying to blend short term success with long term plans is no mean feat and credit has to go to Cortese for getting the balance right so far. The most significant thing to have happened in the last 3 years was getting rid of Pardew (who did a great job of getting things going again) and getting Adkins in. I had massive doubts and it seemed a strange one at the time but I honestly don't think we'd be sitting where we are with anyone else at the helm. Whatever happens this season it's been brilliant and exciting, lots of goals, some outstanding football and plenty of wins to boot.
