  1. We've signed George Bailey - Australia's 20/20 captain as our player in all forms next season http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/20452334 Think we might need a bowler as well
  2. I think all the talk here about respect for the dead of two world wars is irrelevant in McClean's case. He grew up, or at least his parents would have grown up, in a place where the British Army weren't seen as heroic liberators of the world from fascism but as an occupying force. I don't necessarily think his point is anything to do with those who died in the world wars, it's much more recent than that.
  3. Quite agree - nobody seems to take the long view. Adkins is the best manager we've had here for ages. Let him learn with us, I don't care if it means him taking us down and back up again. Memories are short - earlier this year I walked into the 'Obelisk' in Woolston after a game, I remember chatting with another fan, both amazed at how the team were playing. He said 'the only thing that can stop us is if they give Nigel the England job when Capello leaves'. He wasn't joking, I didn't see anything surprising. Adkins will be a top drawer manager somewhere - hope it's with us Also - we desperately need some stability. Last Saints manager to do two successive full seasons? Dave Jones. Last manager to be in charge for 100 league games? Branfoot. All that chopping and changing really hasn't helped Glad that the fans last night seemed to be behind him. Really hope he stays
  4. Absolutely agree. I'm Saints through and through but won't go if that **** comes back. Our problem since Nicholl has been chopping and changing managers. We should stick with NA
  5. We said all this before the City game - and yes I know we lost, but gave a much better account of ourselves than any of us thought we would. Think SRL will still play a part today
  6. Jimmy Case. Among keepers Eric Martin and Kelvin Davis

    Mark Dennis

Saw him at Eastleigh a couple of years ago with Adrian Aymes, the old Hampshire wicket keeper. Was Mark Dennis the most underated Saints player? Speak to fans of other clubs and they think he was just an absolute nutjob - but in my opinion he had it all as a left back, could run, pass, tackle, cross like a winger... Every talent apart from being able to keep his mouth shut
  8. Matty's goal against Wimbledon in 1994. Just after Branfoot left, horrible day, horrible match. Matty got the free kick played back to him, tees it up for himself and volleys it in. I'm sure there was a milli-second of stunned silence before the crowd went mental. I couldn't beleive that anybody would even attempt that, let alone do it And all of the above
  9. Nah - we lost that game with the wonder goal - you're probably thinking of the 2-0 vs Liverpool in 83-84
  10. Having lived through the Branfoot era it'd take a lot to stay away from SFC. That club is part of my identity, the only thing that's been a constant feature of my life for 40+ years. But - if that **** came back, I'd boycott untill he was gone
  11. Think David Turner is the only other with five - championship in 73, B&H in 88 and three sunday leagues in between A perfect day yesterday (Hants-wise). Agree re Bates - I've been crtical of his batting before, but he's a superb keeper. Think we should just concentrate on the positives with him - he's never going to be another Pothas - or even an Aymes - but he brings a hell of a lot to the side. Well done Hants, a great season
  12. Sorry, can't post a link as its behind their paywall. Says he's happy with his decisions to come here, and to stay when we were relegated in '09. says he learnt a lot in League One - "You learn about physicality, contact, getting the ball back. You get tackled from everywhere, challenges that would be a red in France" Not bothered about poor start as we've shown we can compete Nearly missed the piece when skimming the sports pages, as still not used to the new kit!
  13. Another vote for Highbury '84 - but the Watford 7-1 was no fun either. Also - as above - Burnley at SMS in 2009 - relegated, in administration and you didn't know if you'd ever see Saints play again
  14. Went to Loftus Road and Lords in 1991 - but that was 60 overs, not 40, so started at about 10.30 and finished about 7ish (?). We nipped out to Shepherds Bush (2-2 draw) during the middle overs then got back for the Hants successful run chase in the dark. Not sure you'd be able to do both now - I think the cricket is supposed to finish at 5.15
  15. Six signings - probably the last time we signed as many in such a short time. Ripley, Hughes, Howells, Marshall, Beattie and Mark Paul
  16. Er, the other crud was James Beattie...
  17. This time last year the favourites for promotion from the Championship were Leicester and Notts Forest - as they both had ex-England managers. The likes of Venables never see beyond the top few clubs I'd forgotten about him - I think I hate him almost as much as 'arry. Both are dodgy cockney wide-boy ****s loved by the media with reputations much bigger then their actual records
  18. Now the demise of the skates really would be the icing on the cake - and would certainly help to make up for having to move to a PO post code!
  19. Swindon in the first league one season seems to have most mentions - my son's first away game! Davis played exceptionally well to keep it to 1-0. Pardew shipped out most of the team that played that day asap. Didn't go to the Bristol Rovers cup game - but it was live on the BBC, which meant loads of people at work got to see it - 'I saw your boys on the telly - and Christ they were sh*t!'
  20. Chertsey
  21. Apart from nursery rhymes I think that was the first song I ever knew - certainly the first 'rude' song! To kids of my generation growing up in the So'ton area Ron was THE hero. Happy birthday Ron - would love it if it could be arranged for him to come over, or better still, a testimonial game
  22. Ball, Hoddle, Strachan, Pardew and Adkins the top five, the last two not at Premiership level. Ball only there for 1 1/2 seasons. I'd go for Hoddle as best - he might have been barking mad, and a less than pleasant character, but sure knew how to organise a football team. Can't help but agree with Dalek's 'what ifs'. WGS let himself down by putting out a side in a cup final to lose 1-0. Worst? 'arry boy in my opinion. The Dutch duo were absolute clowns and Branfoot was anti-football, but neither had the reputation that Fleet Street's friend had. He failed big time with us. Those players would not have gone down with WGS or Hoddle
  23. Looks about right - think Theo only played about 20 games though, so might have Kenwyne Jones (?) or even Rasiak
  24. None of it matters, not the Reading or Blackpool games, not the three skate goals. In August we're level with Reading and whoever comes up through the playoffs Couldn't possibly have expected this - a great season

    Epsom

Live in Chertsey. Have to pick up my son from Reading tomorrow though before going to the game. Sounds like loads of Saints fans in the vicinity
