Players will leave for all kinds of reasons so it's not always about being on a level playing. This summer, it's likely that two will go because they can go to a bigger club and get paid three times more. Others will go because we don't want them or the player has an issue with the manager or role in side amongst other things.

But to pick Defoe (as an example) of someone who should go on the basis of form (and using goals as a measure for this) excludes the shape and systems of the team. Defoe is very one dimensional, he's never going to operate as a number 10, wide or drop deeper to any good effect.

Not sure why people think he won't have many "better" options. If he and his agent weren't confident that someone big would be in for him, I'm sure a new deal with Saints would be considered but it doesn't seem it ever really has been. Fully expect Wanayama would be of interest to at least Arsenal and Spurs. This forum has talked itself into the conclusion that Arsenal wouldn't want him for example.
