One thing for sure we have not learnt our lesson. We need a big name manager. Sturrock was out of his depth and since then we have been making the same mistake over and over again. Strachan or Hoddle would have been a far better appointment than Adkins.

Plan C, bring in Strachan or Hoddle, lets get someone in who knows what they are doing.

The rot started in 2004, we appointed a League 1 manager over an England and premier manager. We are getting what we deserved. A small minority of fans are directly to blame for this, but they won't admit and won't own up.

Both managers had pedigree and were class acts. Both managers had the respect of the players who listened to what they said. the appointment of Sturrock (the result of a very selfish minority of fans), started the rot.

Some of these posts are a bit strong I think.

Come on everyone, let us break the spell and campaign for Glenn Hoddle. He could do the job.

Depressing result, just got back from the countryside. Had to flee Norwich as rumours of plague carriers in the City. Just recieved a text from a Canary to say they was robbed, I replied with words so HMCustoms and Revenue ! Probably not safe to go out tonight methinks.

Looks like a good team, is Connolly available, on his day, one of our most talented players. Trouble is he could still be in the treatment room.

Actually that looks like the one that was used by Saints in 2004 to appoint Sturrock.

Some people thought that about Brian Clough when he joined Nottingham Forest. I am sure they would have been happy for him not to have been appointed so that they could settle for obscurity over winning the European Cup twice.

A very good post and i agree with much you say. The crux of the matter was that you did not have to like Hoddle as a person as long as he did a good job for the club, which he had done in the past and to some extent he did for England. Therefore he was the man for the job. I have just been reading 'As long as you Don't Kiss me' a very well respected book about the Brian Clough. He was controversial, eccentric and not always liked but he knew how to manage footballers and he knew how to get his teams to win matches, just ask the supporters of Nottingham Forest. So sure, we decide not to appoint Hoddle because he left us to go to Spurs. Fine, and it must have made some people feel good to snub Hoddle but was it worth the cost ? I remember being intensly disappointed at the appointment of Sturrock. Here was a man out of his depth before he had even jumped in the pool. You sound like someone ITK, surely you must admit that with the Premiership players we had in 2004 they were going to respect Hoddle, with all his pedigree over someone who had achieved moderate success with a moderate football club. Finally, this issue did begin the sharp decline of the club. It is painful history, but although many would prefer to erase it from their memory it does not deserve to be lest we make the same mistake again.

Yes but we played some of our best football under Hoddle and achieved one of our highest points ratio IN THE PREMIERSHIP, but some fans preferred a modest League 1 manager from the mighty Plymouth.

To understand NOW, you need to understand how we got here. Yes, it is great that at long last we are looking to a bright future. We were incredibly lucky to be saved by Markus and we always be indebted to him and his family. However, the reason we were brought to the brink is important and it started after we appointed Sturrock as a last minute panic appointment instead of Hoddle. We did not appoint Hoddle because of the vocal minority. Ask yourself, why did they never reveal themselves ?

While we are talking about naming and shaming, how about the buggers that stopped the appointment of Glenn Hoddle in 2004 from owning up ? These are the real culprits in our downfall and those yellow bellies have just faded into the background and spend most of their time blaming anyone but themsleves.

Like Connolly potentially one of of our best players. Shame he spends so much time in the treatment room.

Ner, we have a history of preferring League 1 managers over Premier and even successful international managers.

Oh well thats 6 wins in a row and up to 7th in the Premier League. Hoddle must be doing something right.Like to see us managed by a League nobody in the future and throw away our league status...only joking !
