In the 5 or so years before the Brexit vote the pound used to trade normally in the range of $1.55 / $1.60. The Brexit decision meant that foreign investors could see the damage to the economy to be caused by Brexit and the pound has weakened. In the last year it has only momentarily risen above $1.40 and for most of the time since Brexit it has been in the $1.20 / $1.35 range. Oil is priced in dollars. A weaker pound means that we pay more for our petrol than would have been the case before June 2016. Even allowing for the tax element of the price of petrol , just due to currency weakness everyone has been paying at least 4; pence more for every litre of petrol that they have bought over the last 6 years. The current price would be c 10 -15 pence per litre cheaper if the pound was at $1.55 instead of current levels. But at least we "got our country back". Not sure that it is worth it.

Stories of the economy contracting after Brexit are just "Project Fear". -
Because despite what you said, the land controlled by Russia is only half the size of the UK - not "many times".
-
Thanks. The trouble is that our friend Alex will not admit that he is wrong. He will now just skulk away and come back in a few days time quoting some obscure Twitter poster that apparently shows that the Russians are invincible. Some people never learn from their mistakes and misunderstandings.

"Vast swathes" ... et I don't think so. Have you seen a map of Ukraine? Why do you downplay the cost to Russia of their invasion? Cost economically, militarily, diplomatically and the cost to their reputation world wide. I would suggest that the cost to Russia of the small amount that they have gained dwarfs the cost to the western world of defending Ukraine.

True but no need for Labour to panic just yet. The next election is 2 years away and the fact that Labour have a lead in the polls considering where they were after the last election is encouraging for them. The longer that the fat clown stays in power the more damage that he does to the Conservative brand. If he stays until the next election I daresay that Basil Brush could win the election for Labour. -
If you read any of the mid game comments in matches where Obafemi played you will know that he is utter crap and is stealing a living as a footballer - along with many others in our team. Now he has left and scored for Ireland he is the next Messi.

Apparently he would have done worse than Theresa May did in her no confidence vote if there are more than 133 votes against him. She only lasted s few months after that. If there are more than 133 votes against him, he really is a dead man walking. Not quite sure how abstentions fit into that scenario. -

Why the vote of no confidence? I thought that Johnson was playing a blinder. π -
Ok. I give up. Carry on with counting your Brexit benefits. Nice to see that you now understand that we wouldn't have to join the Euro to join the Single Market as you thought s few hours ago. Progress.
-
Ok. No personal insults but you clearly do not know what you are going on about. Ellwood 's article has evidently gone right over your head. Have you read it? The Single Market came about in 1993. It was not the same as the old common market. EU states are all in the Single Market along with non EU countries such as Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. To make it clear YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE EU TO BE IN THE SINGLE MARKET. Margaret Thatcher was one of the leading architects of the Single Market. She could see the economic benefits of being part of a market of 320 million people. Look up her speech at Lancaster House in 1988. The debates back in 2017/ 2019 about a "soft Brexit" and "hard Brexit" were essentially about whether we stayed in the Single Market or completely cut off all links with European countries. At the time of the referendum people like Daniel Hannon and Michael Gove claimed that the debate was not about the Single Market. According to them we would be staying in that even if we left the EU. Boris's "oven ready" Brexit deal has seen us leave the Single Market and Ellwood (a Tory MP) is advocating rejoining it. Go on. Read Ellwood's piece. You may learn something.
-
There is no need to ditch the pound to rejoin one of Thatcher's proudest achievements - the Single Market. Either you are stupid and don't know the difference between the Single Market and the EU or you decided to comment on something without bothering to read it. That would also make you pretty stupid.

Far, far too sensible for the current Conservative party and it's media cheerleaders. What a state this country is in. https://www.politicshome.com/thehouse/article/we-can-upgrade-brexit-and-ease-the-cost-of-living-by-going-back-to-the-single-market

To be fair he only played 15 games for Hull. Is that too early to pass judgement on his ability ?

Apparently he owned one of the horses running in the 3.45 race. It lostπ. Mickey Channon trained a winner today. π

... And Anfield in the League Cup semi final. What a moment!!
-
I'm not sure how you work that out. Last summer in the Euros we won 4 nil in Ukraine but limped to a miserable 0 -0 with Scotland. Add in the traditional Scottish / Welsh hostility to England and I would prefer Ukraine any day.

If Johnson goes there could be one hell of a fight for the leadership. The swivels such as Baker and Davis have been very vocal in their dislike of Johnson. Like Duckie, they see him as a pinko and will want to replace him with a "true Tory". On the other side there are the pinkos. The likes of Ellwood and Tugenhadt who have often seemed not to fit in a Johnson government. They are probably far too sensible for the Conservative party membership's seal of approval. Hunt has been rejected once by the Tories and maybe damaged goods now. Interestingly the "diving wardrobe" Pompey Penny is shortish odds (8/1) with the bookies to become the next leader. As a Brexiteer who doesn't seem to be a swivel could she be the compromise choice? -

Isn't it strange how it is always Liverpool fans have trouble getting into grounds. Man City fans, Chelsea fans, Arsenal fans or any other fans never seem to have any issues.
