The article was primarily concerned with referees in local Youth and amateur games where there is no technology and linesmen are drawn from the competing clubs. Some of the tales that they told make me wonder why anyone would become a referee at the lowest levels. Apparently the turnover is about 6-8k a year

I was originally going to sniffily say "based on how many matches?" but I thought that perhaps I should read the article first - 15 matches it appears. That is a big enough sample to provide a strong suggestion of bias - unless of course he mostly reffed us when we played teams above us in the table and Atkinson mostly reffed us when we played teams below us. Their analysis does not give us much of a feel for that.

Some of the expectation heaped on Austen by some of the people round me when he came on was ludicrous. As you said, they seemed to think that he should score every time he touched the ball. "Get it to Charlie!". He'll score us goals but, as he showed today, he will miss a few as well.
