  1. Gotsmanov didn't get much of a look-in though since Shearer, Rod Wallace, Rideout and MLT were around. He only made a couple of starts and when he did play I thought he actually did quite well. Really he was probably only signed to keep Cherednik company, but he did score against England at Wembley.
  2. Actually, Arsenal had lost to United the week before - resulting in Pizza flinging. But it did preserve their unbeaten home record. It should have been 3-1 as Kenton was through on goal in injury time and was chopped down from behind by Cygan. It was a red card and Delap penalty for his hat trick, only the referee saw nothing. To cap it all, he allowed play to continue long enough for Arsenal to come close to getting a winner.
  3. Mark Hughes sems to have forgotten how many times he benefitted from refereeing decisions when he was playing for United.
  4. It was pretty much a fluke that Dia got anywhere near the side. A trial game that would surely have shown him up was cancelled due to the bad weather and because we had so many injuries it was a choice of not putting out a full squad of substitutes or giving him a place on the bench. Although he looked very poor when he came on he wasn't as hilarious as the urban myth would have you believe. Every Saints player that day was dreadful. What a great story it really would have been as he came close to scoring with his first touch. The real consequence of Dia was that we then became perhaps too cautious regarding foreign players on offer - for example we were given the first choice on Paolo Wanchope. We turned him down and he helped Derby win at Old Trafford in one of his first games and always caused us trouble - although being pretty much rubbish against everyone else.
  5. 1-0 at Nottingham Forest in 83/84 thanks to Danny Wallace
  6. Like to see England win - apart from when Venables was in charge. But my love for Saints is visceral.
  7. >Kanchelskis were embarrassing by the time they signed for us. (the latter made worse by being the first player to inherit MLT's no.7 shirt). I am surprised by the number of times that Kanchelskis come up in this type of discussion. He was really only training with Saints as a favour on the part of WGS while he looked for something else and did well enough to get signed on a short term basis. He made one just appearance as sub against Everton in early 2002/3 - a game we won 1-0 against the odds - that really isn't enough to be called embarassing.
  8. Ronnie Ekelund away at Coventry in 94-95. A masterpiece of one touch pass and move football. Strangely overlooked by Saints fans.
  9. Took six calls as the line kept dropping just when I was about to complete. But eventually renewed for me and my two boys for a total of £288. That's over £200 less than last season.
  10. Why not have a membership costing say £10, but you get that back off the cost of your first ticket?
  11. Has Fry actually put any active effort into selling the club? Or has he just sat back and waited for people to express an interest?

Will be back in the CCC even faster than Wolves. As soon as they see his lack of pace exposed they will loan him out.
  13. They don't even know that Ian Wright is BWP's biological father
  14. Clive Mendonkey. Rubbish player who scored a hat-trick for Charlton against us.
  15. Who are the 'we' that might deserve the point deduction? I don't deserve it. Neither do the thousands of other Saints fans who are being penalised for something that was totally out of their control. The new people coming in don't deserve it - it was nothing to do with them either. The people that might deserve it are no longer associated with the clubt.
  16. In the days of the Dell having a season ticket was something of a privilege, because for many years there was a waiting listing. So being able to keep yiour seat was sufficient reward for renewal. But SMS is completely different since there is much greater capacity and everyone who wants a season ticket can have one. However, all I look for for renewal this season is to get the same three seats I have in the Family Centre at the same price I paid last season. For future years though I would like to see some sort of built-in discount scheme for renewal of 5% discount per season, building up to a maximum of 50% after 10 years. The possible loss of that discount would provide a really good incentive for people to keep renewing. Also, the club needs to be smarter in looking at other season ticket options, such as deals for two to five years. It would bring in more money when the club needs it now. But could also be a great option to fix your price for future season tickets, especially if we go up.
  17. Yes but we are already beyond the championship. He might be able to get us back into it and that would do me for the next two or three years.
  18. If Steve Moran hadn't got a nasty back injury in 81-82 we might have won the league. Although he did come back and score some useful goals, especially at Fratton Park, he was never quite the same. Without that injury he would have rivalled Rush in goal scoring and would certainly have played for England.
  19. I think they were produced by Score Draw http://www.scoredraw.com you could always ask if they have any old stock. Toffs http://www.toffs.com/icat/southampton also offer two yellow and blue away shirts.
  20. On the basis that I have just seen a Newcastle side surrender meekly without a shot on goal - much as we have become used to - I can't see that he is what we need
  21. Absolutely right. The foundations are already there on three sides apart from the Itchen Stand to support an increase in capacity to about 40,000. The current capacity of 32,000 was not dictated so much by ambition or budget, but by planning considerations relating to concerns about the capability of the transport and parking infrastructure to handle anything bigger. The initial idea was that once the club had proved it could handle 32,000 crowds ok without bringing the city to a gridlock then talks could open about expansion. Stoneham was going to start at 25,000 with similar conditions about future expansion. Although it seems to have happened by default, in my view we ended up with a better option at St Mary's. And the traffic isn't that bad compared with other grounds. I have a 120 mile journey home and usually get back around 7.30 ish on a Saturday - and I always stay to the final whistle.
  22. >The original point made is very true, football is broken, and the greedy money grabs fat cats at the top are without doubt responsible To our shame though, Saints were one of those 22 clubs in 92 that signed up to create the Premier League, having forgotten that we came from the lower leagues we were casting aside. You could almost believe in Hoddle's idea of karma. Since of that original 22, 10 clubs have gone on to play outside the top two divisions. And league one next season (if we are lucky enough to still have a side) will contain four or five founder members of the Premier League, depending on the fate of MK Dons in the play-off final.
  23. Probably half this story is true at least. If Saints fold it would leave league one short of a club. So I guess one of the clubs in the current relegation places won't go down. That would leave league two short of a club - that would probably mean Chester won't go down. So it seems entirely possible that the league might be thinking ahead and asking the Blue Square how they would deal with having one less club? Now I guess it is possible that would leave a slot for a reformed Southampton. But that would be very kind to us when we could reasonably expect to have to start from the bottom. But there is not a great deal of precedent since I think the last league club to fold was Maidstone in 92. And I am not sure if a club outside the bottom division has ever folded in living memory.
  24. >Let's not forget, here, that Saints were one of the original 22 clubs who unilaterally jumped ship in 1992 to form the Premier League in the first place How right. And you can almost believe in Hoddle's Karmic retribution because I think we will be the 9th club out of those 22, including many like us who lost sight of where they came from, to since drop down into the third tier. There is some hope though in the current plight of Newcastle, which could easily be Spurs or Villa etc in a bad season. Because it will highlight the risk to the moderately sized clubs that a reduction to 18 clubs will greatly increase their chance of relegation. And whatever is said now, Premiership 2 will be the Championship by another name. Much as I hate the idea of Celtic and Rangers being in the league, I can't see a rational argument against it with Cardiff and Swansea having been in it for years. And I don't think UEFA will object either to them joining at a lower level than the top tier. In fact about 10 years ago Monaco were keen on leaving the French league to join Serie A and UEFA were happy to go along with them, but insisted they start off in Serie B so it didn't happen.
  25. What I wonder is do they even practise shooting? When you watch the shooting practice during the pre-match warmup they can hardy hit the target. So is it any wonder they can't do it under the pressure of an actual game? Are they taught how not to clear the first defender with a corner - or do they rely on natural talent for that?
