  1. Show action replays of goals on the big screens. Scrap all forms of pre-match entertainment and show the live SKY game on the big screens instead like they do at Leeds and Crystal Palace.
  2. I think the other model shop was called 'Hobbies'. I remember it closing down and virtually giving away loads of plastic kits.
  3. Patstone & Cox. Also had football shirts in wooden draws marked 'QPR', 'West Ham' etc
  4. The Patrick Barclay article refers to Jones as being unaware that he would run shoulders with the likes of Crouch in the Premier League. He doesn't realise that Jones had been in the same Premiership side as Crouch at Saints.
  5. It's hard to believe this now, but the best toy shop in Southampton was Currys - opposite the Bargate where Maplin is now. It was the same Currys as the electrical retailers, but back in the mid 60s they used to sell toys as well.
  6. My son's lettering fell off within hours of having it done. Got a replacement from the shop with no problem, the L fell off at Wembley and the rest of the letters are following
  7. What they should do is knock down the West Quay centre, which is where the new ground should really have been and then rebuild it incorporating the stadium.
  8. Worst ever penalty was at White Hart Lane in 87. We were on our way to a well earned draw when in the last minute Flowers made a great and very brave save at the feet of Paul Allen. The referee saw it as a penalty and Clive Allen won the game for Spurs 2-1.
  9. I would say Bolton. Spurs will go thanks to Redknapp but that's probably more than a year away.
  10. What was Peter Story doing showing the contract of one his employees, which you assume is a private matter, to Redknapp who has no connection with the club?
  11. I think it was a matter of luck in choosing the route away. We parked in the East Street car park and were away heading back up to the Midlands slightly faster than normal if anything. I did think at the time that traffic was lighter than usual on this route. I assume because so many people will still gridlocked in the City Centre. I do agree that traffic handling in general after football matches needs looking at, however I think on balance that Southampton is on a par with most. Easily the worst is Huddersfield - we were still trying to get away from the town at 6.30 after a game that drew a fraction of yesterday's crowd.
  12. What was even worse was the player who deliberately went behind Waigo who was walking backwards so that he would knock him over, and then grabbed his ankle in apparent agony to make it seem that he had been stamped on.
  13. The comment that the author makes regarding the 'images of warfare' depicted in the walkway mural show that he made no effort to research his subject or even to view it properly. Laughably he can't even tell the difference between the cruise liner on the mural and a navy ship.
  14. Charlton 5-0 was in August 98, so not in this decade. Still though a good shout as one of the worst games ever.
  15. The problem is that our unpredictable weather makes a winter break pointless. For example, we had really poor weather this year in late January/early February. So last season a winter break over Christmas would have meant no football when the weather was quite mild and then starting up again to hit the snow. It can work in countries where they can say with reasonable certainty when the bad weather will come, but not for the UK. What would we should do is reduce the number of games played overall, as a 46 game league season is quite ridiculous, and that would take the pressure of having to play games when the conditions are poor. Who wants to watch a game in sub zero temepratures anyway? I have only just thawed out from Elland Road.
  16. We should be ok. In the past the Saints ticket office has always given me a refund for away games that have been called off.
  17. It was the 1983/4 season. And when we won that game, as we were surely going to do, we were going to be top of the league. Sadly when it was replayed we lost 2-1, even with Mark Dennis making his debut. That rainy Saturday cost us the championship.

    1984

At Highbury for the semi-final I was sat right behind the dugout and Lawrie had Puckett stripped and ready to come on for Williams but just couldn't make his mind up to do it. My main memory is of the final three away games in the Midlands in a week - Birmingham Saturday, West Brom Monday, Notts County Thursday. At West Brom in front of a tiny home crowd the game seemed to be heading for a 0-0 draw. Then we had an attack and you could clearly hear Mick Mills shout 'we can win this'. We duly won 2-0. What was most pleasing was that according to the press the title was between Liverpool and Manchester United. And that's how the VHS video of the season's highlights 'Race for the Championship' bills it. Thanks to us and Forest, United became the first team ever to finish fourth in a two-horse race.
  19. Yes so have I. Didn't notice before, just assumed it would be behind the goal.
  20. Good point. But it's worse than that, we have been easy meat in the cup for lower division sides since way before the Premiership started - Barnsley at home in 85, Leicester away in 82, Birmingham away in 80, Villa after a replay in 69, Leicester after a replay in 1970, Bristol City in 67. And I will never get over losing at home to Wrexham in the 5th round in 74. We should also remember that if Rotherham get through they will be looking for their 4th consecutive cup win against us.
  21. What hasn't been mentioned is that we had to deal with a referee who was aching to give Northampton everything he could. Gutterdidge got away with a terrible late challenge on Harding with just a warning. Lallana was clearly pushed down in the penalty area and then right at the end Harding was pulled back in the penalty area. Ok we had pushed the ball too far, but it is still a penaly whether he could have got the ball or not. And what was going on with the refreshment kiosk at the back of the Alwyn Hargarave stand? Even though there were only Saints fans in the whole stand the stewards wouldn't let anyone get to it. Maybe they were saving the pies for Akinfenwa?
  22. Didn't he get a yellow card in the second half for diving?
  23. I have seen Saints play at 83 grounds in England, but that doesn't mean I am that close to the 92 with us as the total includes new grounds eg Ayresome Park and the Riverside. I did complete the 92 in 1994, but with lots of new grounds being opened recently and new teams coming into the league the target of completing all the current grounds has rather got away from me, even though my actual total is over 110.
  24. West Ham away August 1970 1-1. Got Geoff Hurst's autograph outside the ground before the game. Tommy Jenkins gave us the lead with what might be the finest solo goal of all time, going past defender after defender and leaving Bobby Moore floundering. What a shame it wasn't filmed. Jimmy Greaves got a dodgy penalty for them to equalise. It was an evening game so we had a day out in London before, including going to the top of the Post Office Tower (now BT Tower) which you could do in those days.
  25. Even better was his long range screamer to equalise at Highbury in August 1980
