  1. SCW joined Saints in an official position in July 2005, after we had been relegated. But he had been speaking to Rupert well before then so might have had unofficial influence.
  2. I wouldn't necessarily be against a new design, especially to something closer to the city crest. But when you look at how appallingly many badges have been modernized - Arsenal, Leeds, Fulham, Newcastle, Stoke, Aston Villa, QPR, Reading for example the balance of risk must be with staying with what we have. That said, there are some lovely badges out there - such as Sunderland, Swansea, Spurs and West Ham.
  3. The Tree actually represents the Dell - a small wooded valley or hollow
  4. Denis Hollywood v Leeds home in 70-71 season. He stops the ball on the goal line and trys his party piece of rolling it along the line to Eric Martin. It goes the wrong side of the line and into goal. From holding our own in the game we went on to lose 3-0. Its on the Match of the Day compilation video. Channon's hat-trick was against Everton at the Dell in 69-70. They were champions and it was one of only 6 games we won that season. Eric Martin had been concussed in a collision, which explains the own goal when Channon tried to pass back to him.
  5. Jeff Kenna never had an international career? 27 caps for the Republic of Ireland. And only horrendous luck with injuries prevented Richard Hall from playing for England.
  6. Always feel that was the most devastating defeat in our history. A brilliant season and an off day in the game it mattered most. It was the springboard for Everton, who were awful that season to go on and win the league in 84-85 - that could have been us. My abiding memory is of being sat behind the dugout and seeing Puckett stripped and ready to come on for Steve Williams, who was a shadow of his normal brilliant self due to injury. But Lawrie couldn't seem to make the decision. It was the first year in history that a semi-final went into extra time in the first game - so typically it had to be us that suffered. If it had gone to a replay - which would have been at West Brom - we would have made no mistake in thumping Everton. A 1-0 defeat at Goodison on Grand National day also contributed to us not winning the league!
  7. I'm praying that they bring Dean 'Relegation' Saunders in to get them over the line.
  8. It is about time that the authorities woke up to reality. We do not have all-seater stadiums now. We have very large areas, particularly away sections, that are effectively just terraces with seats on them. You only had to have been at Selhurst Park two weeks ago to see how potentially dangerous that is. So either the seating regulations are enforced and people are made to sit - which is a ship that sailed long ago as we have a 20 year legacy of mass standing in seating areas. Or we introduce properly designed and regulated safe standing.
  9. I can accept that there is a question of opinion on Brown's challenge. But Foy and his officials clearly failed in their duty of care by allowing play to continue while a player was lying seriously injured on the pitch, that is what I condemn him for. And for continuing play even after Lovren was seriously injured. Had Sunderland scored mayhem would have ensued.
  10. I have do doubt In Boruc's ability. But he didn't show the strong hands on the second goal yesterday that he showed at Liverpool for example in pulling a freekick out of the net. I do wonder if his hand is fully healed and we might have rushed him back too early.
  11. I agree with the point, but some of the names quoted on the list were actually very successful for us. In 83/84 Frank Worthington played an integral role in the best season I or any other Saints supporter is likely to see. I wouldn't call that a failure. Joe Jordan scored 17 goals in 61 games and led the line brilliantly in 84/85 when we qualified for Europe. Horne was an important member of the side in the late 80s playing 148 games. Petrescu had an amazing record when he first joined us - we won five in a row and he scored the winner twice - it just went wrong when Hoddle, who had signed him, moved on.
  12. Last minute RL winner at Exeter to turnaround a game we had been losing, and a game that historically Saints would have lost.
  13. I love the cup and so does my 16 year old son. But it doesn't have the buzz it used to. In 84 we rested Steve Williams from an important league game so he could play in the cup, would be the other way round now. Two decisions by FA have hastened the decline in my opinion - making it possible to win ties on penalties rather than going to a second replay (I was at Filbert Street in 78) and staging semi-finals at Wembley.
  14. I have 3 season tickets in Family Centre, 1 x adult, 1 x 16 year old, 1 x 13 year old. I have upgraded the 13 year old twice this season to adult. First time, against Swansea had no issue at all. Second time, against Fulham, the person in the ticket office said it wasn't allowed but after I said I had already done it once this season they went and consulted a senior manager and it was ok after all. Last season i did it a couple of times with no problems. I kind of understand what a previous poster has said about maintaining the adult/child ratio in the family centre. But as long as there is still a child going it shouldn't be a problem - my view is that I have already given the club lots of money and I am trying to give them more rather than see a seat unused.
  15. Quite literally a great commentator. He came out of the Dell press box and had a chat with me before a game against Spurs in the early 70s. I was about 10 at the time. Midweek football for me will always be 'Sportsnight with Coleman'.
  16. Had a quick flick through Arry's book in Waterstones. He tells us that when he joined Saints we were 18th in the table, 2 points ahead of the team in bottom place. No mention that we were just 1 point behind the team in 17th position. Or that he only needed to improve our league position by 1 place with well over half the season left to play in order to keep us up. No, listen to Arry and we were 'cut adrift'.
  17. Fashanu was the first loan player to score for Saints. Always felt that if we could have managed to buy him we could have made something of him. He came back to haunt us as well, scoring for Notts County at the Dell in 83 - a defeat that could have made the difference between runners-up and champions.
  18. Finally worked ok after 40 minutes trying. And no ticket tax even for postal delivery.
  19. Keeps taking me all the way through and then saying I have exceeded my allocation
  20. So they are still carrying on with the loyalty points nonsense, even though they never actually applied them last season and there was no way of checking how many points you had credited to your account.
  21. no that's right. I emailed the shop about it. It's in the small print. The online shop also no longer allows you to get the discount for having a Saints credit card.
  22. Mel Blyth came back to the Dell playing for Millwall. But not against Saints as we staged an FA Cup 2nd round game for a non league team - can't remember who though.
  23. Yes I am addict of the Big Match revisited. I use it to show my 15 year old son what football used to be like. There is a Big Match DVD featuring Saints as well. But unfortunately a number of our games that I know were on it, such as a 4-1 away thrashing of Luton in 76-77 aren't included.
  24. It's rather mean of the club that the 10% discount for season ticket holders in the shop doesn't apply until August 1st. Also, there is a new online payment system that doesn't give a discount for having a Saints credit card - which is the only reason I have one.
  25. The problem with the away kit is that when it will be used clearly hasn't been thought through. It will only be used in the black shirts, white shorts combination at Liverpool and Cardiff. The shorts will have to change at United, Stoke, Arsenal, West Ham and Villa. Black shorts would have been much more sensible and I guess we will get them as an option, unless we wear the red shorts. There is no need for a 3rd kit though until we get Bournemouth in the cup.
