Good article. But not quite right to claim that Tore Andre Flo was unknown. His brother Jostein was already established, Souness spent months trying to sign him for Saints and he was reported as having signed for Everton in March 97.

Spurs came 9th with 52 points that season. We might even have finished in the top half had he been able to maintain that record

Was he the last new Saints manager to win his first game in charge?
-
Maybe they are? TNS (The New Saints), the best team in Wales, are based in England.

One of the great things about Mane is that unlike a lot of speed merchants he has a real work ethic. However, he might be even more effective if he tackled back a little less. I am sure that the two silly yellow cards at Anfield were a result of him running himself into the ground and not thinking clearly. The yellow card at Sunderland was also due to him trying almost too hard.

Graham Hiley was hardly a young reporter even in 96. It was just a strange set of freak events with weather causing training to be cut short and injuries meaning we didn't have a full bench.

Alan Shearer goals for Southampton 1988 - 1992

That Arsenal footage is a real find -
That is what i do as well. I park in the Walton Lifestyles Sports Centre (L4 9XP) which is free when Liverpool play but £5 for Everton. From there it is about 20 minutes or so walk if you get a shift on. But after the game you can be straight away in not too much traffic and back on the Motorway in no time.

Facebook advertising can be very tightly targeted to find the exact sort of people you are looking for and in a specific area. But of course it does work better if it is the younger generation you are after.

Wenger is just as bad as Rogers in my book, he was openly tapping up Walcott before the transfer. He even suggested that we had an obligation to sell him to Arsenal for the good of English football. These are some quotes from 2006 >Arsene wenger openly admits he is a big fan of Theo Walcott - but insists no deal has yet been struck to bring the highly-rated Southampton teenager to Arsenal. Reports yesterday suggested the 16-year-old was set to join the Gunners in a deal worth up to pounds 10m. However, Wenger maintained such talk was premature, but indicated he would be keen on adding the youngster to his squad, which was today bolstered by the signing of French Under-19 international Vasiriki Abou Diaby, and the confirmation of Monaco striker Emmanuel Adebayor's arrival is expected within the next 24 hours. 'He's a player we rate. I rate him personally and we are looking at him, yes,' said Wenger. But the Arsenal manager insisted, 'It is not at the numbers you suggest because we are not in advanced negotiations at all. 'Is he available or not? We are not the only club who is after Theo Walcott - but you ask me if I like him, I will say yes.'

What always surprises me is how expensive tickets are even in the lower division. I paid £24 last Saturday for Chesterfield v Wigan.
-
That's a good shout. He still has unfinished business in the Premier League and is a project man. Gary Rowett at Birmingham is looking increasingly impressive.

emailed the ticket office and had a call back from Halo (who run the Dell Bar) yesterday. They told me that the passes are jut being sent out and will arrive before Saturday.

Southampton FC: The Blueprint More Clubs Should Be Following
Kenilworthy replied to Convict Colony's topic in The Saints
Actually Arsenal have been out of the top division - and the circumstances behind their promotion in 1919 without earning it are rather interesting http://www.theguardian.com/football/2001/apr/11/theknowledge.sport -
Southampton FC: The Blueprint More Clubs Should Be Following
Kenilworthy replied to Convict Colony's topic in The Saints
Only thing that makes me nervous is that in 2003 there were plenty of articles around suggesting that Southampton were the model way to run a football club. -
I was there - on holiday in Scarborough. First 10 minutes they looked like they would take York apart. But they tend to over elaborate and over pass the ball, not unlike Saints. Mitrovic looked decent but never had any service. First goal was a real cock up that knocked the stuffing out of them. Second goal was a wonder strike. At 2-0 they lost their shape for a long period and even when they got a goal back never really looked like equalising. It was a surprisingly entertaining game. Didn't see anything there to worry me, but there were a lot of first choice players missing.

1971 home v Leeds. Score is 0-0 coming up to halftime. Denis Hollywood stops the ball on the goal-line and does his party piece of rolling the ball along the line for Eric Martin to pick up. Only he rolls the ball over the line. The stuffing is knocked out of us and we lose 3-0 to the hated Leeds with Fred Dineage sitting behind me in the press box beside himself with glee.

Unfortunately that benefit isn't continuing this season - they refer to 'retail offers' but no discount -
The Long Overdue Pointless 2015/16 (Adidas) Kit Thread

The amber and black started in 1951 for a cup game against Sunderland. The shirts were borrowed from the Hampshire Regiment. Since they continued to 1971 that is one of the longest standing away combinations we have used. -
The title race in 83-84 was viewed generally by the media as between Liverpool and United. With United being the first team to finish 4th in a two horse race. I have the VHS video compilation of highlights from that season 'race for the championship'. It is billed as being between Liverpool and United, only in the final moments does Brian Moore mention '... and by the way Southampton were runners-up'. The gutting thing about that season is the games that cost us the title were stupid ones - losing at home to Notts County (relegated at the end of the season), losing to Norwich and Luton, thumped 4-0 on QPR's carpet.

Travel to Sunderland for just 1p per mile!
Kenilworthy replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Call me pedantic. But isn't it 0.5 p per mile assuming it is a round trip? -
Have the BBC got this wrong about Europa League qualification?
Kenilworthy replied to niceandfriendly's topic in The Saints
I thought so as well. But actually the rule about FA Cup Runners up not getting one of the Europe places does not apply until next season. -
