Glen Cockerill Goal Against Luton - 1989 League Cup Quarter Final 1989

I have the official VHS video of the goals from that season - 88/89. But it is copy protected that prevents transfer to DVD. Videos of later seasons weren't protected. -
Glen Cockerill Goal Against Luton - 1989 League Cup Quarter Final 1989

It looked great that night even though it was at the other end. The referee did for us in the replay - in fact three quarter finals in a row we were denied by malicious refereeing - Luton, Oldham and Man U. The other goal I would love to see was by MLT at Watford at the end of the 86/87 season. It may be the only goal of his that you can't see somewhere. -
Before he ended up at Chelsea on transfer deadline day that season he was actually unveiled as having signed for Everton - which shows how complicated dealing with his club was.

Effectively Saints are getting a winter break.
-
The main point of the story seems to be that they didn't like him not using his ticket. You might understand if he was in the habit of doing it regularly but once is ridiculous. Would they ban someone who missed the game because their car broke down?

I had my stopwatch on the game and the extra 4 mins was absolutely correct. However there was at least a minute of stoppage in that time that should have been added. When the final whistle was blown we had something like a minute still to play.

You don't really need to get a taxi. There is a train service from the airport straight into the central station - our hotel is 100 metes from there

One thing that causes me concern is that the reason for appointing Puel was apparently to bring our young players through, unlike say Pellegrini. But we are not seeing any real signs of that so far. I don't want a team full of youth players, but Reed should be getting a chance.

'Resolve'. As in Manchester United are planning to test Southampton's resolve to hang onto Jose Fonte. And has anyone of us ever 'vowed' to do something. -
Manchester United Away on Aug. 19

No still waiting for mine -
What we have at the moment is a lunatic situation with all-seater stadiums in which a fair proportion of people stand - and in the away section it is pretty much 100 percent as there is no choice if you want to see. My view is that standing in seating areas, especially where they are steeply banked, is actually far more dangerous than standing on terraces that were designed for it. Sooner or later there is going to be a serious accident with people toppling over. But as anyone who has ever spoken to the authorities about this will verify they just bury their heads in the sands and come back with the stock answer - 'we have all-seater stadiums, they are safe'. I don't want to stop people standing, far from it. I would like them to have the choice. But equally I would like to have the choice of sitting down. My father-in-law has been a Saints supporter since the early 50s and was a regular away fan. But now he hardly goes because he physically can't stand for a whole game - how can that be fair?

How do we create an environment where players want to stay?
Kenilworthy replied to eddie's topic in The Saints
Maybe one answer is to look for quality players like Bertrand who have been with bigger clubs and have come to realise that money aside, it might be more enjoyable to be playing every game for a team like Saints. That certainly seemed to be the case with our latest signing from Bayern Munich. -
I would love Ballotelli - there is a great talent there if someone could get it out of him. And unlike certain players I don't think he is malicious, just nuts.
-
But what if we get drawn against another team on the South Coast? That might suddenly make it seem interesting. Although I am firmly in the boycott camp.

Samuels is a West Ham supporter - where is their English manager? Also, surprise, surprise, he sees nothing wrong with their stadium deal.

Another Euro manager just about to become available

I don't have any issue with Toby as he never committed to us since he was on loan
-
I think three years is a perfectly reasonable 'tour of duty' with Saints, so have no issue with Clyne, Big Vic or Morgan. It's the likes of Lovren that disappoint
-
We are getting a bit off topic with KK in this thread. In his first season he took our play to another level, in his second season we went top of the league for the first time in our history, he was top goal scorer in the first division and PFA player of the year - I can't see how that meets any definition of disappointing. What was massively disappointing was that he decided to leave after having promised us a further season.
-
It was George i was talking about being hardly ever fit. Osgood himself admitted to not being fit when he joined us - had he been we would almost certainly not have been relegated. But after then he actually put up a good appearance record for Saints. His Chelsea record was better than a goal every 3 games in the first division, with us it more like a goal every 4 to 5 games in the second division which is not bad by any estimate. But matches of world class brilliance like Sunderland home in 75/76 were not always the case - it was disappointing that he went off on loan to Norwich at one point and left early in the promotion season.
-
Charlie George - absolutely fantastic player but injured when he joined us and hardly ever fit. When he was fit he was sensational. You could mention Peter Osgood in the same vein as well. A world class player who could be brilliant - such as when he demolished Marseille - but didn't do it enough for us. But then he should never have had to spend three seasons when he was at his playing peak in the second division.
