  1. To which he replied by scoring the equaliser. The crowd for that Easter Monday game was 11,500. But not one of Chelsea's current fans have jumped on the bandwagon since they became successful...
  2. Ideal celebration of 20 years at St Mary's as first game ever we got humped by a Spanish team
  3. Bet on Townsend to score his one goal of the season in this game.
  4. I think the difference is that at United they had a team of high quality players who could cover the deficiencies in Beckham's game so he could get on with doing what he was best at. We don't really have that, so a specialist player becomes much harder to use effectively.
  5. Arsenal would love that kit. What happened to tribute to 1976?
  6. Have stayed here in the past https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186394-d1068261-Reviews-The_Brighton-Newcastle_upon_Tyne_Tyne_and_Wear_England.html Not exactly luxurious. But easy walking distance to the stadium and therefore the city center
  7. This is absolutely true. It was confirmed to me by Graham Hiley (former Echo Reporter) that by December 96 Souness had given up the ghost and Terry Cooper effectively became the manager. This one of the main reasons that Rupert, having seen what he had done, kept him on the staff when he became chairman. I had a long chat with Terry Cooper outside Old Trafford before our game in February 97. He seemed a very decent and approachable man. What he said about Souness was that he was the best coach he had ever seen in terms of explaining to players what was wanted and actually being able to demonstrate it himself. But our players just didn't want to listen
  8. I would suggest that Ron Davies - just the 37 goals in his first season with Saints, along with Barry Horne - would elevate Wales above mixed
  9. Absolutely right. And he was talking when it was only two points for a win. Buying a top quality keeper would paper over a lot of the cracks in the side and actually enable us to put off reinforcements in other areas. It is a blindingly obvious solution. But we will never do it.
  10. I have thought about that. But what if they check IDs before going in? I guess I would be ok as my home address is 130 miles from Southampton.
  11. While McCant was a very poor signing wasn't Rupert actually backing his manager as Strachan was very keen on him? He also backed Arry in signing Quasie. Delgado did seem to be Rupert's own signing. In fairness, although it was a disaster it could have been a brilliant move. And I think we were aware of having missed out on Paulo Wanchope - who was actually a dreadful player who kept scoring against us. If Rupert has to carry the can for the poor signings then he has to be applauded for Niemi, both Svenssons, Beattie, Dean Richards, Kevin Phillips...
  12. You don't have to submit a list of penalty takers to the referee in advance. You used to, but that changed some time ago. So while Southgate will have had his own list drawn up, he had the freedom during the shootout to send up anyone he wanted from the 11 that were on the pitch at the final whistle.
  13. He is the PL equivalent of Moonlight Graham
  14. Ings would also need an exceptional season to get into contention for the World Cup - which he will not get on the bench at a top six team.
  15. I went to the Italy v Spain semi and was actually far less impressed at seeing both teams in the flesh than I expected to be. Italy showed some great touches but also misplaced a lot of passes and the keeper looked a little erratic. They are beatable.
  16. Fantastic player and real hard man. Once sent off on a stretcher at Elland Road.
  17. It looks nice. Struggle though to think of where we will actually get to wear it. I would guess Leeds, West Ham, Burnley, Villa
  18. I guess that of the six minutes added time played then less than two was actual football. The answer would be to make time added on actual ball in play time, with the clock stopped for every stoppage. Although I do sometimes wish that Saints would learn some lessons about game management.
  19. That was almost the eve of the season. What annoyed me particularly that Keegan had said he owed us another season due to the games he missed through injury. Not that it affected my decision to renew at the time anyway.
  20. To be fair, I recall him being very helpful to Newcastle in 2018. And he has actually scored at St James Park. Despite what the article says, I don't think he will need to be "prised" away from us.
  21. Are 6 foot midfielders that unusual that its worth mentioning in the headline?
  22. I know it doesn't make sense. But why have we not won at Arsenal since 1987? Them being better is a main factor. But in that time we have won a number of times at teams better than us like Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea
  23. St Mary's was built down to a price and it is showing in the general deterioration. In contrast, Wolves completely rebuilt Molineux between the 80s and 90s using high quality materials and it still looks great (ok one of the stands is very new). The Dell being run down is a bit of a myth perpetuated by the media. While Saints actually looked after it very well. That's not my opinion. It's what Simon Inglis says in the Football Grounds of Britain (published 1996): "One of the unfortunate ironies of the post-Taylor period is that there are at least three grounds which have never been in such fine fettle, yet are now slated for the scrapheap. St James Park, Newcastle is the most extreme example - too small but perfectly formed. In the same category fall Blundell Patk and the Dell. ...And yet as I repeat, the Dell has never been so tidy or welcoming, as can be seen at the rear of the Milton Road Stand, which has a grey-clad upper storey with a decorative arch and glazed roundel...
  24. Selling JWP would be an awkward issue for the club to skate over since I have just had a "personal" email from him thanking me for renewing my season ticket. And they would have to scrap the new shirts with the AR image of him.
  25. Would not be surprised if JWP did move on when his stock his high. But would have thought it will be to a club where he will win something, such as Manchester City. Talk of a Villa bid could just be a ploy by his agent to get more realistic buyers to put bids on the table.
