  1. Soyuncu is far too slow and inept. Would take Perez.
  2. I took the 40-year period because it was in 1980 that a second division team (West Ham) last won the FA Cup. The 1970s were a wonderful era when the FA Cup really did have some magic. The big difference is that in 1976 relegation had not seen us stripped of the world class players we had in Channon and Osgood. The second division was still regarded as decent football by the media and often featured on MOTD. As we shall soon find out, relegation will see us stripped of the passable Premier League quality players we have now.
  3. Breaking into the top six might be a closed shop. But winning a trophy is feasible while Saints remain in the PL. In the past 40 years also-rans like Norwich, Coventry, Oxford and Wigan have won silverware when in the top division. With relegation that possibility disappears. In the same period just one team - Sheffield Wednesday - have won a trophy as a lower division team. For me that is good enough reason to want to stay up.
  4. I don't think ticket prices will be that much cheaper in the Championship, especially for away games that will still be £30. And going by 2005/6 the level of disappointment will be much the same. I really don't think we are a straight back up sort of club. And the Championship is not a long stay division, generally teams leave at one end or the other. If we go down we need to be prepared for the possibility of league one and it will not be the same as under Cortese Pardew and Adkins when we were the Manchester City of the division.
  5. I am not sure there would be many takers for any of our players. KWP should be playing at a higher level but is just coming back from injury and looks well off the pace. JWP is terribly out of form and at the moment wouldn't excite any other team. Apart from those two I don't think we have any better players.
  6. This is the broadcaster that took a commercial break in the middle of the Charlton V Brighton shootout.
  7. Definitely worth a short term deal. Have seen him be very effective in the past.
  8. Southgate's mediocrity needs to be measured against the achievements of Croatia with a population of around 4 million
  9. Agree - watched Blackburn against Norwich last night and he wasn't involved. The game gave me some hope though. Because two terrible teams seem to be doing ok in the Championship. We could do worse than Rondon who is now a free agent.
  10. It is a reasonable solution to the madness of having 48 teams at a finals. I certainly don't think you should have a World Cup where some teams only get two games. What I would prefer is a return to a 16 team tournament every 4 years. But in between tournaments there should be a sort of FIFA FA cup where all the 200 plus associations in FIFA are drawn against each other in a straight knockout.
  11. Gutted for Richarlisson...
  12. While we remain in the Premier League there is an outside chance of winning a cup. We were in a final just five years ago, followed by pissing away two semi-finals. With relegation the chance of a cup win disappears. Yes I was at Wembley in 76, but that was at a time when a second division club was still allowed to have world class players like Channon and Osgood. 1980 was the last time a lower division club won the FA cup and it isn't going to happen any time soon.
  13. Yes there are not many Ian Rushs out there. I wonder if Ricky would have thrived so well if a Premier League team had taken him from League One? I think the key to his success was that he evolved as Saints evolved from League One, which is why Toney did well. Don't think you are being completely fair to Deeney, his leadership was absolutely crucial to Watford, but then he also arrived in the top division via promotion rather than transfer.
  14. It is fortunate that Mane is injured otherwise Senegal would give us real problems. It is not going to be easy but I think we will just get through.
  15. What we really need is a Mickey Evans
  16. I ordered something on Sunday and much to my surprise it was delivered today.
  17. The third goal by Ekelund here is a thing of beauty
  18. Tom Jenkins at West Ham, Bank Holiday Monday 1970, my first ever away game. Saints in gold and black. Dribbled past the entire home defence, left Bobby Moore on his arse and then curled the ball into the net. Hurst equalised with a dodgy penalty
  19. Ever heard of Stan Mortensen? He might take issue over the hat-trick in a domestic cup final
  20. Some merit to Gyorekes but he lacks pace
  21. It is clearly taking longer than expected to warm the balls of the top six teams
  22. At least a year too late
  23. They have already done a great job on the Avenue. It used to flow freely and now its a virtual car park even coming in 4 hours before kick-off.
  24. He got into those positions quite a lot during the whole game but generally never hit the target. Maybe the coaching is better at Spurs?
  25. Just the quoting function not working properly and picking up something old
