  4. Another repeat from Martin Samuel in the Mail tomorrow.... Saints so blasé There is a lot of whistling to keep the spirits up at Southampton. The club are letting it be known that they are not as troubled by Ronald Koeman's departure, as they were by Maurico Pochettino's two summers ago. They knew players wanted to follow Pochettino — they are not convinced the same is true of Koeman. Then again, it was not long ago that Southampton were briefing how relaxed they were by Everton's interest in their manager. So blase, indeed, that they did not even have a pre-emptive board meeting about it. After all, why would Koeman leave for an inferior club? Southampton have managed the adversity of recent years so well that it must seem easy. Players come and go, chief executives and managers, too, yet the club continue to thrive. They are well set up, with a good academy and very efficient in the transfer market. The mood around Koeman's exit, however, feels closer to complacency. Far from not losing players, it appears likely Victor Wanyama and Graziano Pelle will go — and while Pelle lost form in the second half of last season, he will still need to be replaced. Sadio Mane will also attract offers and how he views them may depend on arrivals and departures. Whatever unfolds, it is going to be another season of transition and if clubs the size of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham have struggled with that in recent years, it could certainly catch up with Southampton. Arsenal and United have a size that makes them immune to a significant change in circumstances, but Southampton are among the new big clubs built from smaller old ones. A few bad calls could do serious harm, and they have no reason to presume clear passage. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3638002/Sorry-England-stuck-playing-catch-Luis-Suarez-Gareth-Bale-scruff-neck-match-winner.html

  7. "However, the Toffees can now be a big club and, for perhaps the first time this century, truly act like one. Everton can bully and harass for the best. If they want a striker, they will get him. If they wish to keep their star man, they can." ...also they don't want to keep Lukaku

  14. Martin Samuel: Saints past sell-by date for Koeman Selling players catches up with every club eventually. Southampton may have defied gravity again this season but Ronald Koeman knows it cannot last. The process of renewal that takes place at the club every summer, with fine players leaving and fresh recruits arriving, cannot succeed indefinitely. Eventually, a mistake will be made, and Koeman has decided not to be around when it happens. That he is joining Everton, a club that finished 16 points and five places below Southampton last season, is telling. Everton have been sellers, too, and may be again this summer if the right offer comes in for John Stones or Romelu Lukaku. Yet that would only put Koeman in the same position as when he joined Southampton. Five players were sold that summer, but the new manager simply used the money to construct his own team. He could do the same again at Everton. If Stones fetched £40m, say, Koeman might believe he could be adequately replaced for half that. Lukaku, Everton's top scorer, would be worth even more and Koeman will surely have received assurances about Everton's ambition, sale or no sale. At the very least he will get any transfer money to spend, plus more, and will be shopping at a different end of the market. Southampton are a well-run club, offering Europa League football, but while they continue to sell each summer, they will remain a stepping stone rather than a final destination, for managers and players.
  15. You're forgetting they won the league in 1987, as long as they stick to signing players born in the late 1970s they'll be fine.

  25. 15:40 Mane could stay at Southampton We've got some news coming out of Southampton this afternoon, courtesy of Sportsmail's SAM CUNNINGHAM. He reports that Sadio Mane's exit from Southampton is far from decided, with a source close to the player revealing he appears to be changing his mind about wanting to leave. It is believed he recently bought a house in the local area and, despite being all set to go in January when Manchester United made an offer which Southampton turned down, his exit is not so certain now. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-3612192/Transfer-news-LIVE-Manchester-United-Arsenal-Liverpool-Chelsea-plus-Premier-League-Europe.html#ixzz49tYMLh57
