I get very nostelgic for the days when this club used to make "unrealistic" signings ( Ball, Osgood, George, Keegan, Shilton etc) and ok times have changed but I wonder what our strategy should be now if we are to reach the Prem. and compete there. We can try to sign young improving players but at some stage we will need players with Premier league experience. Should we not be trying to introduce one or two now or should we wait until we are promoted and then have to change things more radically ?

We need pace but there are times when an experienced older head is required as well, thinking back to the influence Alan Ball had on our last promotion to the top league and of course Jimmy Case when we had a lot of emerging youngsters. There is the problem of fitness and players looking for a last pay day but how about Patrick Vierra. He is the best of that type of player I can think of and shortly out of contract at City.

I don't know who's worse, the people who leave early or those that want to go on the pitch. it just shows the small club mentality of some of our fans. You don't see pitch invasions at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, The Emirates, Anfield or any big club. Sorry to be boring.

Look out boys the Saints are coming through, and it's all over now baby blue B. Dylan

Never mind the rights and wrongs of whether you should get a yellow card for taking your shirt off the fact is you will and so to do so is imho totally unprofessional. I watched football for about 40 years and never saw one player take his shirt off after scoring so you can celebrate in other ways. I'd fine any player that did it 2 weeks wages. To do what Stern John did and then get sent off for a second yellow in a crucial match was absolutely criminal.

Still think momentum is everything,1 loss and the doubts begin to creep in even though on paper we can afford to lose tonight. If it was any other team you would say they were home and hosed, but this is Saints. Just keep winning Boys.

I know everything is going well and 12 points should do it but we've got to get them and I think we will but no Chamberlain, Lallana half fit, no back up in central midfield, what team will we be able to put out against Hartlepool 2 days after Brighton. I can't be calm and relaxed until we've crossed the line.

Just get this over as quickly as possible Saints. Relax? If we lose tomorrow I'll be terrified

Lunnis Hiron Walsh Claridge (There might be a theme here)

He was right to start with Williams but should have taken him off for extra time. The following week we easily beat Everton 3-1 in the league with Alan Curtis playing making it an even bitterer pill to swallow.

It will go to the last game of the season, you know it will, it always does.

I agree there are exceptional circumstances and these are usually fairly obvious, but I don't remember there being a minutes silence for instance for Tom Parker, Derek Reeves or Tommy Trainer all of whom made huge contributions to Saints, but that of course was before Cortese was Chairman so there wasn't the fuss.

If we win on Saturday: Good for Saints, Bad for Bournemouth

This game is our cup final Oh Shi* -
Agreed, otherwise where do you draw the line? Do other clubs have a minutes tribute for every player?

The difference between Southampton and bournemouth.....
Tom & Gerry replied to BHA's topic in The Saints
6 points but we've got 3 games in hand and that is all that matters. -
OK friends, the time for revolution is upon us, we must march on St Mary's and remove the evil tyrant. The evil dictator has only one purpose and that is to return our beloved team to the Premier league He is so single mindedlthat he removes whoever stands in his way from the kingdom be they former hero, the media, fans fraudulantly trying to obtain season tickets, or Premeirship clubs trying to turn our noble warriers to their own cause. We must occupy St Mary's in our hundreds of thousands until he is gone and we can install our true leader, the failed night club owner. Then we can bask in our former glorious (and at times not so glorious) past. All will be welcome. It doesn't matter what league we are in, if any the Southampton social club will be alive and well and we will always have '76 and the last goal at the Dell and we will be royally entertained for the rest of our days by Messrs Osmond and Davidson. Now is not the time for doubts my fellow Saints fans now is the time for action. Well I do have one small doubt, Nicola Cortese doesn't seem the type to me to go round trashing other people's property but hey rock & roll, what do I know.

Hang in there and it's whoever holds there nerve in the final 10 games. So far though it hasn't quite been promotion form all season so probably 3rd or fourth. I can see us losing to Huddersfield in the final after being 2 goals up. It's just the way we do things especially on telly.

Even Premier league goalkeepers make mistakes let alone League 1 keepers. Kelvins had a bit of a bad run since winning us that point against Brighton (how soon forgotten), and I agree the situation has to be watched but I would stick with the experienced man at this crucial stage if at all possible.

Well less than 10hours to find out. I'll settle for Nasri (if he passes the medical)

As Southampton conduct all their transfer dealings in secret I would like to know where the £10m has come from. Is it just tabloid rumour speculation that has now been touted round as gospel? In the current financial situation I wouldn't think a Premier league club would pay a first division club anything like that for a 17 year old who has played only half a season, even though he has shown occasional flashes of brilliance. A couple of million maybe with a bit more for appearances, hence no deal.

When were we last top of any league? Must be 25 years ago?

Saints vs Manchester Utd - 4th Round FA Cup Draw
Tom & Gerry replied to saint_bert's topic in The Saints
Why do we draw them nearly every other year? ( it seems like) I would have liked Arsenal, Chelsea or City just for a change. -
Some people prefer to live in the real world and believe what they see with there own eyes on the pitch not how much we've spent or pie in the sky hype about becoming a force in the premier league with our own style of play. Half a season has gone and we have not peformed or looked capable of becoming a top 2 team.

One of the first FA Cup games I ever saw was Saints v mighty Blackpool in 1959. As now Blackpool were in the first division and Saints the third, and Blackpool had Stanley Matthews playing age 43. The crowd jammed in to the Dell was over 29,000. It's sad but times have changed and I wouldn't expect anything like that crowd or atmosphere this time but it's funny what goes around comes around
