It's always a worry until you get to 40 points and you can't get any points in the summer so I can see why some people are always worried at this time of year. The time to really worry is when you are not worried because complacency will really have set in.

Conventional wisdom says that Southampton are a top of the Championship/ botom half of the Premier League type team, and if we carried on in a conventional way with "name" managers and players that is where we would probably be or maybe have some short lived success then drop down again. Sometimes you have to do something different to break the mould and create something better. So far the owners and board have succeeded beyond the wildest dreams of most supporters considering where we were a few years ago. I think they deserve to be given the benefit of the doubt over this appointment and player sales/ purchases this summer. The time to moan is when things actually go wrong.

At least he tries to speaks English. If I gave an interview in French it would be pretty boring.

CONFIRMED - Mane joins Liverpool for £34m + £2m addons

It's good money for a player that didn't seem to like winter and didn't even turn up on time for some games. I think the club thought so to and didn't do too much to try and pursuade him to stay. -
The "Silver Fox" did a great job at Villareal, a club less fashionable than Saints - I would suggest.

Garcia looks worth a bet at 11/1 for the 5.00 at Ascot today. As for being Saints next Manager? I don't know.

Footballers and Managers are loyal to football. They see the game as one big Company with different offices some of which pay more than others and they may enjoy there work at one office but if a better opportunity arises they take it. You only have to look at the England team to see Man U, City and Liverpool players getting along perfectly well where as if it was fans you would need security guards to keep them apart. If some one leaves your office who has done well you may be bitterly disappointed but you thank them for there service, buy them a drink and wish them well for the future. It might be slightly different if they'd told you previously they intended to stay. We are in danger of getting a reputation as whingers if we start hating everyone who leaves and it also puts a dampener on our past achievements. There is a book coming out about our greatest matches . Should the editors blank out the bits about Adam Lallana like Jimmy Saville in a Top of The Pops video? So thanks for the last 2 years Ron and good luck for the future. You should have told me you were leaving but I won't rant and rave if you come back to visit us but the reception might be a bit frosty and silent. I'm sure that would hurt your ego more. We March on

No other club loses it key personnel consistently
Tom & Gerry replied to Batman's topic in The Saints
Isn't 2 years the shelf life of Managers at most clubs these days? We've had ambitious Managers who have done well at Saints and then think the grass is greener else where or they think they've taken the club as far as it can go - McMenemy, Ball, Souness,Hoddle,Strachan,Rednapp,Poch, and what have they won ? 1 measly bought FA cup between them. It was always a disaster when they left but somehow we've managed to struggle on to 6th in the league. -
I should think Wenger is a fan after his displays against them and he would be perfect for Leicester (not sure how the players view Leicester or more importantly what they pay). If we don't get a bumper offer though surely we are better off keeping him for the year .

I think our squad is big enough, so if we want to improve we have to sell and buy better. I wouldn't be too bothered about losing almost anyone we've got at the moment.

Fifty Years Ago it was Getting Tense but we Did it

The "we'll support you ever more " game. A chant we learnt the previous week from Man U I think. We sang it the whole game even though we were being hammered. -
We can all have an opinion about a young player but nobody knows because mostly it is down to the attitude, determination and hard work of the player not the opinion of his critics. A player is nowhere near the finished article in his early 20's and all develop at a different pace, but I would venture to suggest that strength is far easier to acquire than skill.

What a forward line. it rolled off the tongue. Paine, OBrien, Reeves, Mulgrew and Sydenham.

How long before you/we start to get really worried
Tom & Gerry replied to Batman's topic in The Saints
Look how good they were at the start of the season. Apart from Leicester and possibly Spurs has any club not had a dip or underperformed for a spell this season? -
Would people hypothetically pay more at the gates for more signings?
Tom & Gerry replied to eddie's topic in The Saints
No. In football as in life it is better to buy cheap and sell dear, than the other way round. You would think Saints fans would know that by now. -
Any plan that sees us aspire to be a Champions League club with the resources we have compared to the top clubs is bound to have flaws and risks but if we want long term success then I think we are going about it the right way. The alternative is to gamble which which may bring short term joy but will always bring long term tears. Perhaps people should lower their expectations. If we stayed in the premier league for the next 20 years it would be a massive achievement, statistically a club of our size is almost bound to go down. I'm old enough to have seen us play Man U, Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea in the second division. In fact Arsenal and Everton are the only teams that haven't gone down since I've been watching. Have a moan if we lose but keep it in perspective, we could be so much worse off.

James Ward-Prowse's list of indisputable, unimprovable weaknesses
Tom & Gerry replied to ScepticalStan's topic in The Saints
It depends how intelligently he runs around. Some players run around like headless chickens others cover, make space for team mates, get in a position to make simple one twos. It doesn't look like they are doing much but the rest of the team very much appreciate hem and the team plays better as a result. -
James Ward-Prowse's list of indisputable, unimprovable weaknesses

I thought the team looked better balanced with him in on Saturday. I bet he covered more ground than most other players. The trouble is that Clasie (whatever his attributes) has not fitted in as yet. -
Depends what constitutes a success, if you go by statistics - games started, goals scored probably not. If you enjoy watching him play and he adds to your afternoon's entertainment then yes.If not no. His first half against Villa last season built up a lot of credit with me.

He also said that the players should have known Kelvin doesn't kick the ball as far as Stekelenburg and been prepared. I don't think anyone is disputing that Kelvin made a mistake that led in the end to a goal. It is also clear that the club rightly or wrongly have faith that Gaza will come good in the end(by giving him another contract). It would be a huge gamble therefore to bring in another keeper, and some decent names have been mentioned, who might be expected to come in cold after months of not playing and be put under the same kind of pressure that Leicester put Kelvin and the rest of the team under and not make a mistake that could lead to a goal.No keeper in the world can guarantee that. If that happens you've done your money. Don't forget if the team had played well we would have won anyway, and if the team are playing well then Kelvin or Gaza are adaquate.

Interestingly the Echo gave Davis 7 out of 10, top best player and 3 points better than Tadic and Victor. You may think that was a misprint but I find it no more extreme than than some of the views about his performance the other way on here.

Ronald, Les and the England goalkeeping coach must see something in training that others don't. They must think those faults can be overcome. A lot of patience may bring it's reward.

1)The day I see football as s business is the day I stkp going. Sentiment is a huge part of football and there is nothing wrong with respect. 2) In my opinion he was not that bad but perhaps the truth is somewhere in between. All goal keepers make mistakes and I think it would be difficult to find a good one prepared to put their career on hold and then come in cold after say 5 months and have the confidence of the defence.
-
1) I don't expect footballers to be hero worshipped in this day and age of outrageous salaries but do think loyal servants who have spent a long time at a club and helped it get promoted 2 leagues deserve a little respect from so called supporters. 2) When a team is playing badly you need your keeper to be outstanding. On Saturday Kelvin was just on the level of the rest of the team. He was a little rusty as you would expect of any number 2 who doesn't play much, though he did make (in my opinion) one worldy save in the first half. It's a team game and you need others to cover for individual mistakes. Someone covered for Mane's mistake no one did for Kelvin's. 3) There is not much to choose between Kelvin and Gazza, Ronald went for experience. The difference is Gazza will improve, Kevin will not. 4)Those of you who can remember as far back as the summer will recall that there was much doom and gloom as we had to replace a number of key players. The previous summer was even worse. In spite of this the ream have played with a remarkable team spirit and togetherness. Ronald didn't wave a magic wand and this just happened, it was down to people like Kelvin to help create that spirit. Give the guy a break.
