He was talking about how he's 'hoping to bring in one or two players before we start', he then goes on to say that he's pretty confident we can start with the existing squad. In context he means that he wants the existing squad to be strengthened but if that doesn't happen then he's 'pretty confident' that the players we have now will be good enough to start the season with.

This is all reasonable, but a lot of us said the same thing after the play off season (although it appears that the club is in a totally different situation now). I'm not sure I agree that we will be signing people for cover only - we definitely need a central midfielder who is at least as good as Hammond and I feel that Pardew will be merciless if an opportunity comes along so sign someone who is better than even one of our 'star' players.

As yourself and others have said, getting him fit is the key. I think that he would fit well in a Pardew team and would be really pleased to see him get back on track.
