I am quietly optimistic about Adkins and am thinking that this is shrewd move. There are a lot of positives in this appointment, not least of which is that Adkins is clearly a very intelligent fellah. I think he'll do alright. Welcome aboard Nigel, no hanging about, do your stuff!!!!

Runaway, this is based on what? I've looked at this whole situation like this; if we are to believe that there have been 30+ applications for the job, there has to be at least a paper sift, then the people that are left are invited to interview. Given the responsibilites of a first team manager these interviews aren't going to be like a speed-dating exercise, each one will be at least half a day for the interview and post interview evaluation. Whilst all this is going on no one will make an offer to any of the applicants until all the interviews are concluded; only then will the successful applicant be offered the job. According to the OS today "Southampton Football Club ("the Club") wishes to make clear that it is continuing its discussions with a number of potential candidates for the post of First Team Manager." Therefore we won't hear anything until these discussions are concluded. And in this regard I agree with the other statement in this piece, that "The Club has acted in an entirely professional manner and will continue to do so." Everything else that has been bandied about is media conjecture and speculation.

Just read The Hills Are Stuffed With Swedish Girls by Richard Happer. The strapline is Walking Scotland's beautiful West Highland Way in search of fun and fanny. Picked this up 'cos there was a load of press about Ordnance Survey trying to ban it 'cos the cover is blagged from the old pink Landranger covers but have to say that it's a pretty good read; the title and strapline lead you to think that this is a right lads book about pishing it up and ****ging your way along the West Highland Way. Whilst there is an element of this in the book the title and strapline are clearly designed to sell the book but the actual story is both funny, sad, descriptive and informative about the Way. It's a light read and won't ever trouble the Booker prize contenders but it's a great little book to pass a rainy Sunday with. ISBN 978-0-9562428-0-8
