Oh, certainly, Newcastle already look a million times better than last season's rabble (albeit still a shambles at the back), but my point was that the side that played up there last season probably wasn't any better than the one that played Sunday, but that the shape was stronger with the defence offered a lot more protection - had we gone with our usual 4-3-3/4-2-1-3, we'd have been much more comfortable IMO.

It's interesting to look back at the lineup for that game last season: Forster; Clyne - Fonte - Gardos - Bertrand; Reed - S Davis - Ward-Prowse; Elia - Pellè - Tadić So no Alderweireld (or Yoshida, who was clearly the next cab off the rank in Koeman's eyes last season), no Wanyama, no Schneiderlin and no Mané. Four players who were unquestionably in our first choice XI last season. I'm not sure that lineup on paper is better than the one that started on Sunday, the difference for me is that it's a bit more balanced. Had Reed or Ward-Prowse started this time - probably instead of Rodriguez, who's still understandably not quite up to speed yet - I don't think we'd have been overrun in midfield in that first half and would have been able to control the game better.

That only applies to the group stages onwards. Clubs are free to set the kickoff time for qualifying games (which don't come under the jurisdiction of the various central broadcasting deals for the competition), hence the vast array of different times in the earlier rounds. The UEFA website says the kickoff time is still TBD.

Not sure I'd agree with that, I can't remember Forster having anything to do. They had a lot of the ball and put us under pressure that night but don't think they created anything - even the goal was a complete fluke (much like their first yesterday) when Gardos punted a clearance against Gouffran's knee and it flew into the top corner. We didn't create much ourselves (although Pellè hit the bar in the second half) but we looked pretty solid, I think.

They have put on 24 for the last wicket so far, though

We've won two games today, as we've been awarded the win from the abandoned Glamorgan RLODC game as well

McClaren basically agreed as well, said he's seen red cards given for those sort of challenges before.

McLaren's bowling has improved in recent years, by all accounts, hence him getting into the South Africa test side. He's also a handy batsman, so should give us a bit more lower-order solidity, rather than knowing that we'd be bowling pretty soon once the 7th wicket went down.

Worth noting the author of the Guardian piece is Louise Taylor, whose articles are written entirely from the eyes of the two big north-east clubs, so any opinions expressed there should be taken with a heavy pinch of salt. I didn't think Anita was anything special, it's more that Tiote is an absolute liability, and that Newcastle visibly sat deeper in the last half an hour which invited us on.

Why no post-match thread and vote for Saints MOTM?
stevegrant replied to Singapore Saint's topic in The Saints
Apologies. Seemed that all the post-match discussion had already started in the main thread, so just left it there. I've added a poll -
Train was about £40 each way including a seat reservation for the longest part of the journey. Not cheap, but it's the equivalent of buying a return from King's Cross to Newcastle at three weeks notice, so not that bad in that context. Stopping in Herning on the Thursday night, no idea whether there was an overnight return train option, to be honest. Herning's much cheaper than Copenhagen anyway Booking website http://www.dsb.dk

Booked with Norwegian from Gatwick to Copenhagen, rectified the mistake I'm now feeling the effects of today after getting the early flight out yesterday morning and the early flight back this morning, and then going to work Out Wednesday evening, back Friday evening. £105 return. Then booked trains from Copenhagen to Herning at 10:00 on the Thursday, arrives just after 14:00, hotel is right next to the station, ground looks like it's about 1km from there. Train back to Copenhagen airport at 12ish. The big financial hit is the hotels though, very little available for less than £100 a night
