  1. Couple of questions: 1. What is “close peripheral vision” and does it appear in the laws of football? 2. Did the referee say he disallowed the goal because he thought Yoshida touched the ball, but later admitted he was wrong?
  2. They’ll probably give the job to Wee Willy Wilson.
  3. From Guardian: Cherries on top after Saints’ coastal erosion It is interesting now to look back on the way Eddie Howe approached his first match against Southampton as Bournemouth’s manager. It came in the League Cup in August 2010, and was the clubs’ first encounter in 23 years and the first of three in a season when both were in League One. “You can’t compare us to Southampton,” he said. “Southampton are a massive club. It’s good to see they’ve got over their financial problems, because I think it’s good for us if Southampton are doing well. They have played us in pre-season and loaned us players, so we’ve always had a good relationship with them and I think that’s important.” Back then the Saints did the treble over them), but now Howe’s side are 10 places and 11 points ahead of them in the Premier League, have won five of their eight games to Southampton’s lonely one, and it looks like Southampton will need luck or charity to emerge from this meeting with anything but defeat.
  4. https://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2018/oct/10/premier-league-arsenal-chelsea-pep-guardiola Apparently "no sign of a premier league procession...". The media are part of the problem.
  5. Went here. No colours (except gold) Good pub. Good beer. Cheap cheese rolls. Close to the ground. http://www.lychgatetavern.co.uk The Great Western looked like a great pub but the queues to get served were way too long.
  6. The team having a mental block about playing at home seems fair comment to me. I attend every home game and I feel we’re going to concede and I sense it in the crowd too. Why wouldn’t the players be thinking “here we go again”. It’s up to Hughes and the coaching team to help them out of that mindset but it needs character as well from the players and cutting out the kind of d1ckhead defending we witnessed yet again last night. That’s not the manager, that’s the players f-king up at key moments.
  7. Easy half time team talk for Hughton. Go at them and they’ll get jittery, the crowd will get nervous and they’ll crumble. But at the end of the night we lost to a poorly defended set piece and a bit of stupidity.
  8. When you are near the foot of the table the teams around you are always bad, that’s why they are around you at the foot of the table. Think of another line because that one doesn’t wash.
  9. If a loan were a good football move I’d take it to get my career back on track, even with a drop in salary. If Forster is confident in his ability to regain form, he would see it as a temporary step back to move forward. For instance, I doubt Burnley are paying Hart anything like what Man City paid him. There’s obviously a limit to how much of a drop in salary Forster would be willing to take but I’m guessing any proposed moves haven’t been right for him from a football perspective. He’s not a perennial back up keeper and whatever we think of his abilities he’s been an England player. He won’t want to be the forgotten man.
  10. Agree, especially as we’ve now bought Armstrong and Elyanoussi who it seems can both strike a ball.
  11. High crosses into their box first half played into the hands of their centre backs so we end up with a series of corners rather than goal scoring opportunities. Ings is too short and while Long wins headers with his back to goal he doesn’t get on the end of many crosses. The one occasion Ings was played to feet first half resulted in a goal attempt. He got a half chance second half with a ball to feet. Bertrand’s goal was from a low cross. For all the high press, high energy, possession, especially first half, which was impressive, the final ball into the box was ineffective. For an intelligent bloke, Hoijberg can be a bit of an idiot on the pitch. Pathetic dive on Saturday reminded me of his long late run up the pitch at goodison last season only to boot the ball into touch and cede possession.
  12. Yeah well we need to try a bit harder.
  13. A winnable game which inevitably Saints lost. Didn’t compete first half. No pressure on the ball in midfield and barely won a header at the back. A better second half but this is both our league games now where the team has gone out onto the pitch and put in a half arsed performance first half. Hughes has to get them up for it from the start.
  14. Hard to know how much of the second half improvement was due to formation and how much to personnel (forthcoming selections may answer that question) but from the moment Ings and Elyanoussi came on their impact and that of the change in formation was instant. Chalk and cheese with what went before. I was impressed with Ings coming deep to link up play. Redmond looked effective playing deeper. The full backs got further up the pitch (we really need Bertrand’s crossing) and the whole team was galvanised. Both Elyanoussi and Armstrong look useful. Mightily ****ed off with how we started and very encouraged by how we finished. Overall a fair result.
  15. In other words, there’s nothing in Warnock’s previous PL record to indicate he can keep a club like Cardiff up.
  16. The contract must be conditional, surely? If I remember correctly there was a balls up over Alderweireld’s contract and someone apparently responsible left the club fairly sharpish afterwards. Since when, we’ve wasted millions on duds. It would be madness to risk millions more with an absolute unconditional obligation to buy, due simply to cash flow, and I can’t believe the club would do it.
  17. What a bullsh1tter.
  18. Charge levelled at Tottenham, they largely wasted the Bale money. Eriksson yes obviously. Lamela maybe. Who else is left?
  19. Not watching the game but it’s often the case that if you can’t get and keep possession in centre mid the wide players are out of the game.
  20. I’m hoping, may be a vain hope, that yoshida’s greater mobility beside him will make up a little for Vestergaard’s immobility.
  21. Saints’ recruitment seems always to have an eye on resale value, which is sensible except where there are weaknesses elsewhere in the squad and limited funds, in which circumstances the recruitment of a good future prospect like Gunn has an opportunity cost to current squad requirements. I’m hoping a few duffers on big money get moved on and a decent forward is brought in (though I have concerns about every part of the team except keeper).
  22. https://www.theguardian.com/football/when-saturday-comes-blog/2018/jul/27/football-fans-internet-club-forums-twitter-youtube-facebook?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other No idea if it’s all it’s cracked up to be as never used it, nor likely to. I guess most forums are not dissimilar to Saintsweb, imperfect. Some good stuff, some not so good.
  23. We don’t have the talent so need to run around a lot therefore Pochettino.
  24. It doesn’t seem to be the way of the modern footballer but I think if I were desperate to play and get back some form I’d consider a wage cut. A temporary step backwards to go forwards.
  25. So cr@p in cr@p out then.
