More evidence comes to light! 2006 FIFA World Cup[edit] Bids: Brazil England Germany Morocco South Africa On July 6, 2000, the host selection meeting was held for the sixth straight time in Zurich. Brazil withdrew its bid three days before the vote, and the field was narrowed to four. This was the first selection in which more than one vote round was required. Three votes were eventually needed. Germany was at least tied for first in each of the three votes, and ended up defeating South Africa by only one vote after an odd abstention (see below). Results Nation Vote 1 2 3 Germany 10 11 12 South Africa 6 11 11 England 5 2 0 Morocco 2 0 0 Total votes 23 24 23 Controversy[edit] The controversy over the decision to award the 2006 FIFA World Cup to Germany led to a further change in practice. The final tally was 12 votes to 11 in favour of Germany over the contenders South Africa, who had been favorites to win. New Zealand FIFA member Charlie Dempsey, who was instructed to vote for South Africa by the Oceania Football Confederation, abstained from voting at the last minute. If he had voted for the South African bid, the tally would have been 12–12, giving the decision to FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who, it was widely believed, would then have voted for South Africa.[7] Dempsey was among eight members of the Executive Committee to receive a fax by editors of the German satirical magazine Titanic on Wednesday, the night before the vote, promising a cuckoo clock and Black Forest ham in exchange for voting for Germany. He argued that the pressure from all sides including "an attempt to bribe" him had become too much for him.[8] Consequently, FIFA decided to rotate the hosting of the final tournaments between its constituent confederations until the selection of the host for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in 2007, when they announced that they will no longer continue with their continental rotation policy -

Yes I see that a large number would be very grateful for the changes in world football and funding instigated by FIFA and Blatter but why does this apply to France and Spain in particular and to a lesser degree Brazil all of whom should have been looking to disassociate themselves from the corruption and nepotism? -

I'd like to know why France, Spain and Brazil voted for Blatter? -

Does anyone want to take on the challenge of putting a book together - "Mythonomics - Portsmouth's answer to Freakonomics"?

£56m assumes the cost of replacing Clyne and Morgan which would bring in c. £45m giving a net outlay of £11m? Good business I think (although not sure about Elia in particular)

The (football) world has known of this for years and so have their governments including the EU so why has it been necessary for the US to take a stance on this rather than one of them? -
Your first step would be the insurance company who will want to claim against their insurance I would have thought.

Very possible that all three teams will enter last day on equal points. Us at City, Spurs at Everton and Liverpool at Stoke. -

This can't be true - they are debt free -
Not sure how attendance levels a century ago (or even thirty years ago) have any relevance to the size of a club today? Same with all the stats tbh. There should be some recent year weighting applied.

Also Portsmouth (1st) and Southampton (2nd) are the two most densely populated areas outside of London http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/HTMLDocs/dvc134_c/index.html

Yes he flagged in the second half but so did Coutinho, Llallana, Davies etc. hence the substitutions. That's part of the game and match strategy these days.

This. Move on, respect the past with fond memories, enjoy the present and look for with anticipation to the future. Thanks Adam.

I did read somewhere on here - not this thread - that should we wish to take up all the option to buys then the cost would be c. £90m!?!? Whilst I don't see that this can be the case I wondered if anyone has a rough view of the figure required as this will be a key element in our summer transfer policy - sell to fund? let options lapse and find new options to replace?
