  1. I go back 53 years of supporting and would agree on Le Tiss and Bridge out of that selection - I would have Niemi on the bench though... To have any credibility at all, any greatest ever Saints' team has to include Paine, Channon and MLT.
  2. Perhaps the problem with your posts are that you are continuously undermining the team - we do have problems in defence but are also, at times, playing some amazing football; many of us are encouraged by this fact as it's of far better quality than we have seen in a long time but you dismiss it as 'pretty' or 'entertaining'...
  3. Do you remember that 5 - 4 league cup game against Leeds? I seem to remember that we had Reynolds, Paine and Huxford in goal that evening! Actually Reynolds wasn't in the same class as Shilton or Niemi but, whilst discussing great Saints' goalies, he is worth a mention.
  4. It takes time - I can recall Terry Paine in his first full season being completely subdued by an overweight Leyton Orient full back and Rod Wallis spent his first couple of games frightened to take anyone on. Let's not write him off after three outings.
  5. Just a tad - my first game was 1955 (aged - Johnny Walker scored twice!
  6. Actually that was Johnny Walker. He used to use both arms as a crude braking system when running towards the wall at the Dell...
  7. Shilton due to not seeing Black play.
  8. I understood it...
  9. That is certainly the impression that I get from reading some posts on here.
  10. Maybe, but they don't do their cause much good. I agree that the club might benefit from a change of leader and direction (it didn't last time, though) but find myself on here defending Lowe because the arguments against him are often so poorly thought out and unfairly biased.
  11. A lot of people on here were saying the same thing - we did have Theo, Cranie, Mills, Jones, Best, Blackstock, etc
  12. In the first half we tended to lump it forward more than usual and were pretty inept; second half was better though - I assume that Jan reminded them about what they were supposed to do at half time.
  13. What a sensible man!
  14. I am chairman of a local society which performs at the Nuffield - basically the director selects the cast but that doesn't stop me from making suggestions, I don't think I would be doing my job properly if I didn't. Mostly I am ignored but sometimes I have made him/her think about other possibilities. Is there a significant difference?
  15. Or, did Lowe want the youth playing because he believed in them and thought they would improve the team? When we were relegated I did think that we would ditch the 'has beens' and start to make use of our youth system - Bates brought in Paine and Sydenham as soon as possible, it seemed sensible to me to start playing Theo, Best, Blackstock, etc once we went down a division; we did have the best youth squad in the country at the time!
  16. Does all that mean that Lowe wanted Redknapp to play Walcott earlier than he did?
  17. Did they do that last time?
  18. As a teacher, I have learnt to look for the positives and encourage my students giving them some confidence and belief - telling them they are rubbish doesn't help them to improve; in fact, quite the opposite. As we are, at the moment, supporting a very inexperienced squad of players why do people think that moaning at them will have the desired effect?
  19. Why shouldn't he? He had just done what he was supposed to do.
  20. It depends on how important your department meetings are - I assume that he has some procedure for being kept informed of decisions though.
  21. It is not plainly wrong - it is called 'being informed' / 'keeping your finger on the pulse', something that you would expect from the person with over all responsibility.
  22. And here it is! http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9024836154390592659&q=ron+davies&pl=true
  23. That's the one! The great Bert Trautman was in goal for City as well - Terry Paine got rave reviews in the papers.
  24. Actually that course of action might stop them from going down the pan.
