I was right - I have just checked 'The Complete history' for 1949/50 season when we missed out on promotion on goal average and they say we had a Goal Ave of 1.333 (for 64 against 48; 64 / 48 = 1.333). On Ponty's website it has 0.3333 - I'm not sure how he worked out the averages but according to him we were promoted with a goal ave of 0.238 in 1960 but relegated with 0.8 in 1953 (rather unlikely)...
Otherwise, it's very impressive! I can scan and send earlier league tables if it is of help.
Me too, I was very impressed. The country seems to have benefitted from having a benevolent ruler who cares for his subjects - it must be worrying for the people when the time comes for him to be replaced.
All the league tables from the 1894/95 season can be found there.
Are you sure that you've got the pre 1975 goal averages right on probablythebest, Ponty? I always thought that you divided goals conceded into goals scored to get the average... i.e. win 5 - 1 then goal average = 5. Lose 1 - 5 then goal average = 0.2
There was a piece on Radio 4 a few weeks ago along the lines of 'shake any five hands at random in Southampton city centre and one of them will be a student'.
Apparently out of our population of 200 000 there are 20 000 students - it would seem that our local economy relies a lot on them and it would be better if they did not 'f*** off'...
Sept 10th 1955, away to Aldershot - we lost 2 3 (of course).
The Recreation Ground was rather odd - you paid to go in and then paid again to sit down. At half time the supports behind the goals walked down to the other end,
I played against him once (I think he was playing for Ford Sports) - he was very overweight and I didn't get past him once (I did get launched over the touch line, though).
The Southampton League refused to cancel the fixtures for the Saturday of the semi final - I spent that afternoon running round Mayfield Park and losing.
He was Jimmy Gallagher, he was the trainer and later on the physiotherapist at the Dell.
Jim was well regarded in football circles and was selected to accompany an England B tour of the Far East. He also had many offers to join Div 1 clubs but was too attached to Southampton.
It was poorly written but I'm not so sure that the name was actually spelt incorrectly - the 'n' was poorly formed and looked like a bit like an 'm'. Not great but quite a common handwriting error.
