Worked there on saturdays for a couple of years. Used to keep maggots for fishing in a fridge in the cellar. Then 1 day I was stood at the top of the stairs and could hear a buzzing. The door of the fridge had been left open and all the maggots had hatched! Couldn't get into the cellar for bluebottles:)
If you fancy serious shopping then a day trip to Woodbury Common will get you out of NY. About an hour on the bus, the last half hour is in the country and pretty in the fall. Tip - Take a wheelie suitcase rather than carry bags round.
Walking is the only way to see places like Chinatown and Greenwich.
Also there was a problem with getting permission from the airport. Frankly not a great place to fly from too - too much chance of going out to sea or to the New Forest (you're not supposed to land there).
