I too would suggest a personal letter - my boy's school sent several begging letters to local companies asking for donations for a summer auction and Saints came up trumps - they provided a home shirt and a triangle emblem thing (there is a name for them, but I've forgotten it), both signed by the first team squad.

Other good buys were Derek Statham and Mark Dennis. I always had a soft spot for Chicken George and was disappointed when he was sold and so very pleased when he returned - ok he wasn't the most gifted player, but he was exciting to watch, as you just didn't know what he was going to do, sometimes magnificent, but also sometimes not so good. Not necessarily a bad buy, but Gordon Watson failed to live up to my expectations of him - you couldn't fault him for his effort, but the goals just didn't come and his arrival conincided with the departure of Jeff Kenna, who I always preferred to Jason Dodd (and Dodd was very good)

Maybe there are offers on the table for some of our players and the club is holding out for more, whereas the buyers are sticking to their offers in the knowledge that we need the cash. I seem to recall that we played a similar game with Forest when we bought Prutton (although I may be wrong).
