The true story is even better. Russia invested heavily in their own secure encrypted military communication system. On day 1 of the invasion they destroyed all cell towers they could to disrupt civilian communication. Guess what infrastructure their encrypted communication system uses…

This ^ the “separatists” consisted of a significant number of Russian military out of uniform. It’s been the Russian MO since Transnistria to subvert a region with a significant number of Russian speakers then move the military in under the guise of peace keeping. I have said it before but I think Russia’s non negotiables are recognition of Crimea and autonomy of Donbas, everything else is up for talks. Russia would be able to claim victory as they obtained concessions for the Russian speakers being subjected to “genocide”. I can’t see Ukraine giving up their rights to Crimea though but I think they would happily give Donbas more autonomy to end it. Not a chance Putin can budge on the Crimea issue sadly as given it was annexed in 2014 it would be impossible to spin surrendering it as anything but a loss.

As lighthouse alluded to fighter jets are considered offensive rather than defensive weapons. The distinction to me seems a bit arbitrary but it seems to be a red line from the perspective of the Russians.

It is illegal in terms of Russian law for conscripts to be put into war zones. There were several reports in fact of conscripts being forced into signing enlistment documents the day before they went in to circumvent this. I think the sheer number of them has now made it impossible for the Russian MOD to deny.

I can say from the people I know from Crimea there was considerable support for the Russian takeover. The difference being it was largely bloodless and quick I suppose and the vast majority are ethnic Russians.

Putin will not back down and a puppet will be installed I am relatively certain. Europe and America are still buying Russian oil and funding the war. I suspect the bare minimum acceptable to Russia would be Ukraine ceding dnr/lnr and any formal claim over Crimea (at least that was my guess before the war started) but at this point Putin just seems insane so who knows.
