Shocking as it may seem but football is a global sport now with every culture adopting it and making it their own. The Americans just Americanized it and support it like they support their NFL teams just like the Africans play Vuvuzelas and dance in the stands. Any country that can produce Mia Hamm, (yes yes women's football and all,) shouldn't really just give up on the game.

Believe he's referring to his stint with Scunny at Champ level. He kept them up didn't he? For a team of Scunnies size that's not bad, the only complaint they seem to have is his transfer record, something we're reserving judgement on anyway. (Cork is however IMO an excellent buy.)
