http://www.cdc.gov/adenovirus/hcp/clinical-overview.html - What people call a common cold will often be an adenovirus! Obvs could be a rhinovirus too though. Although I appreciate the joke!

People get paid a decent amount. To understand how the vaccine works you need to understand how adaptive specific immunity works which is basically that your body recognises particular proteins from past foreign interaction/infection. In this case they can't just chuck the ebola in there (obviously) as it is just string of RNA, so what they have done which I think is quite clever is they've taken 1 particular gene (which codes for a non-threatening glycoprotein) from the Ebola genome and put it in a chimpanzee adenovirus (i.e common cold). So the idea is that the body will recognise this foreign protein and produce antibodies against it. You'll be able to know whether it has been effective by taking blood samples afterwards and testing the antibodies. Ebola as a side note has a very short genome (RNA, not DNA as well) - just 8 genes, 7 contribute to the overall protein structure of it all. Edit: And obvs the chimp virus being used to carry the ebola protein is different enough from ebola that there's no danger it'll mutate and revert back whatsoever, and then also different enough from human common colds that there shouldn't be immunity present already.

It won't mutate into an airborne virus. The kind of structural changes needed to the genome in conjunction with a crap load of chance just means it is so unlikely. And the good news is that a vaccine is hopefully on the way. Second phase human trials begin in Oxford on one possibility today (my friend is one of the subjects). So if the second phase is as successful as prior phases we can expect some fast-track rolling out into endemic areas in the new year.

Seems all fine to me. People have been moaning it isn't as good at it was x time ago forever it seems. Just nostalgia I reckon.

Glad you are still thinking about me! Happy to renew posting, just generally don't have the same amount of time as I did in the past. #sob

Keep it up Redslo. Your blogs are a good detailed read.

Robbie Savage apologises to Saints fans
Saintandy666 replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
I never thought we'd struggle - my own intuition (as uneducated as that is) was that we still had a lot of decent players remaining, and that we seemed to be investing one by one in players who were decent replacements. I thought we'd be in the 10th-14th area, as opposed to 6th to 10th. Of course, I could still have been right, it's early days yet. -
Uninspiring, but winnable at least. But still tricky. I'd prefer uninspiring and easier.

We have to expect another 'big' team eventually. Wouldn't mind Milton Keynes or something like that. Clubs we have a very high chance of beating basically (as long as we put out the right team obvs).
-
Fair enough - I got there with 30 mins to spare so had a more smooth walk up where I could just admire the architecture - and the seating arrangements as I already said! Didn't have too much trouble coming back as walked to Islington and Highbury Tube and that was fine. To Arsenal station on the Piccadilly line on the way up was a bit of a squeeze though.
-
Yep, I really hope we don't boo him next time he comes to St. Mary's.
-
I have to say I was very impressed with the emirates, but I suppose that is what you get for the extra few hundred million. I liked the seating arrangement - seemed to basically be laid out like safe standing would be and they all seemed fine with that. Probably about time they legalised safe standing rather than continuing it de facto as it is at the mo.
-
He came over and applauded. No idea why we booed him. He spent years at our academy, and then behaved as you might expect any 19 year old to in that situation and didn't make a bit public meal of it either. Sure, there's no need to sing his name or whatever, but I thought the booing was a bit off to be honest for someone who put in a lot of decent shifts for us last season and then got us a hefty profit at the end of it.

No reason it seems why we can't be the 'best of the rest' this season and finish 8th again. Whether we can crack top 7 or not, jury is out. I think possibly not, but we have a run of games to see in December or so. -
Makes sense. Don't need a red card.

The Yes were confident of Orkney?! Who have you been talking to? Orkney is solid Lib Dem area and was always going to be decidedly No.

Kevin Davies' Top Ten Football Grounds
Saintandy666 replied to Beckenham Saint's topic in The Saints
Yep - I was pleased I was there for that - my Dad got two season tickets, one for him and one to share between three of us brothers so I selected that game well! As it happens I was also pretty high up and towards the kingsland/chapel corner. I'm pretty sure it was MM something! -

I think I recall being told I went there for a friendly when I was 5 or something like that but have zero memory of it. First proper game was Saints 1 Charlton 0 in first year at St. Mary's. I was 8 at that point... seems a long time ago now. -
Finally have 2 tickets. What a drawn out ridiculous and time consuming process that was. Aside from that, I'm quite excited though. Emirates is meant to be a nice stadium, and I haven't actually been to a competitive away match before (bar Wembley!).
-
It's ridiculous you can't even hold for the ticket office and that it costs so much to bloody call them; 15p per connection. I've had to end up calling reception who say that they've passed on my number to be phoned back. But it all seems a very drawn out process to get 2 tickets for a cup match...
