Seeing as it was referred to so heavily in the recent Star Trek film, I decided to dig out the DVD of Star Trek II - Wrath of Khan while I was bored tonight. They don't make 'em like they used to eh? I remember being taken to the cinema to see this film and looking at the release date I must have been 7 years old, but I still remember distinctly being blown away by the grandeur of it compared to the original series and the first movie, that it was probably this film that sparked my love of sci-fi. Ricardo Montalban played the part of Khan perfectly: Almost over the top but just not too much that he wasn't menacing with it. Delightfully dramatic with all the literary quotes, particularly from Moby D1ck on which the storyline for this film was based. OK it looks a little dated now with some fairly poor special effects, but it stands the test of time in other ways I think; most notably the soundtrack which I think is possibly one of the best original soundtracks for a sci-fi film ever, with the possible exception of 2001 as discussed earlier in this thread. There have been 9 more ST films made since this one, including the recent one, and although some of them had their moments and were visually impressive, I don't think a single one of them can touch this one, nor do I think another will ever be made that betters it. 8.5/10

I think you underestimate the voting public. Believe me I know how shallow people can be at times, but I have never yet known anybody admit to voting for somebody just because they like his haircut or his voice. Though I have never voted Conservative in my life, I must confess I like William Hague as a public speaker. But his biggest problem while he was Tory leader was that the party was on its knees after the utter whitewash in the 1997 election. He regularly humiliated Bliar in PMQT, but ultimately he was on a hiding to nothing.

Clearly some people do watch it otherwise the Beeb wouldn't be flogging it to death like they are. Fair play to them really - they have taken what used to be a cult sci-fi show and successfully turned it into a prime-time family entertainment show. I'll watch it if there's nowt else on. I thought David Tennant was very good, and I will tune in to see what it's like with the new Dr and new writers now that RTD has left. Not expecting great things TBH, but I'll check it out anyway.

Think yourself lucky. Here in Sheffield you can only put paper and card in the recycling bin and it only gets emptied once a month. It's lucky for me that I live right near a supermarket that has a recycling centre so I can take all of my plastic, cans etc... without needing to use the car, but it's still a shockingly bad service considering how much my council tax comes to per month.

Yeah cos we've been getting these big freeze-overs every year for the last couple of decades or so haven't we. Oh, hang on......

I've been accused of many things in my time, but being middle class is not one of them. And who the hell is Kenneth Barlow?

My GF drove up to her parent's in Cumbria today. They live in a tiny little hamlet in the middle of nowhere a few miles outside Kendal with single-track roads as the only access. Just had a txt from her to say she is stuck right near their house - car won't grip enough to get up a hill - and that her dad has got one of their neighbours who is a farmer to go and rescue her with his tractor!

I remember going with a mate to one of the midnight showings of this at the cinema at Ocean Village some time in the mid-90s during their 'banned' season. The problem we both had was that we had both already seen Repossessed - the spoof with Leslie Nielsen - and it was so similar (even had the original actress playing Nancy) that we just couldn't take it seriously. I couldn't really see why it had originally been banned but then I guess audiences are a lot more desensitised to those sort of things nowadays compared to the 70s. There was only one bit that I thought would have come across as particularly disturbing, even though I wasn't bothered by it myself, and bearing in mind there is no way that i can describe the scene on a family forum, I will let you use your imagination as to which part I am referring to.

It's been a lovely sunny day here in Sheffield. Still quite a lot of snow around from yesterday's dump though.

Asking what is my favourite christmas song is like asking what is my favourite sexually transmitted disease. If I absolutely had to choose one that I don't mind it would be The Pogues' Fairytal of New York. Can't bear the rest of them. It's not because I'm a grump who hates christmas, it's just that I am admittedlky a bit opf a music snob and they are invariably just cheesy crap.

I started watching this film but didn't stick with it because I felt no emotional connection with the lead character. Nicholas Cage is another one of those actors who has somehow managed to make a massive name (and fortune) for himself despite being extremely one-dimensional and actually a bit wooden.

Anyway, happy Yuletide (which starts today) to those who don't celebrate christmas.

Which is why he said after today

Let's look at it objectively.... We know Leeds are a very good side (easily the best in this division) and it was always going to be a very tough game. We know that our CB pairing is not as strong as we would like it to be so to only concede one goal against the league-leaders is, I think, very praiseworthy. A bit disappointed that we couldn't gtet at least one goal but it sounds like we gave them a real run for it and had them hanging on in injury time. To know that we gave them a real go and were only very narrowly beaten is heartening. Will be interesting to see how the Leeds fans saw it.

Indeed. Some scholars believe his birthday is in april, whereas others say september. Nearly all are agreed that it definitely wasn't december 25th. It's just that the christian church didn't like the idea of the world's favourite festival being a pagan one so they hijacked it for themselves.

That was his re-birth (and if you believe that then you are a poor, deluded idiot - but let's not turn this into a theological debate!)
