  1. A Single Man Went to see it with my GF the other night. Wasn't expecting great things but she wanted to see it so I went with an open mind. It's all centred around a day in the life of an English College Professor, living and working in LA in the early 1960s, who is struggling to come to terms with the recent death of his partner and contemplating suicide. A decent enough performance from Colin Firth in the lead role, though I could not escape the fact that with his glasses on he looked the spitting image of Michael Douglas in Falling Down at times. Some of the narrative (from Firth in character) resonated with me on certain levels, and considering the premise of the film it never really felt overly sentimental, but overall I never quite warmed to the character and I think that you would need to in order to appreciate the film fully. It is directed by Tom Ford who is more famous as a fashion designer than a film-maker, and this kind of shows as there are plenty of moments where he tried to get a little too artisitc with the camera work which didn't really add anything to the film and felt just like they had been included for the sake of it. Having said that, it does look great at times as well. There are some nice moments in the film, and the chemistry between Firth and some of the other characters works well, especially with Julianne Moore as his semi-alcoholic divorcee friend who moved from London with him, but on the whole I never really connected with any of the characters and that, for me anyway, is the most important aspect of any drama. 6/10
  2. OK, Leeds showed that it was possible, but it took an almighty effort from them to do it. I hoped we could follow suit but was not confident that we would. It was always going to take time to get what was effectively an entirely new team to find their rhythm and start performing, as our start to the season showed. After the sh1te that we have been put through over the last 5 years, I didn't expect things to turn around overnight. I also didn't expect us to be getting to a Wembley final, so the fact that we have is a very welcome bonus IMO and should not be offered as an excuse to why we haven't set the league alight. Just my humble opinion.
  3. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think that starting the season on -10 is a pretty good excuse. But only if we are within 10 points of the playoffs come the end of the season, which I think we will be. People may say that our cup runs have harmed our chances of reaching the playoffs, and they may well be correct, but none of us seriously expected us to get to the playoffs this year after starting on -10 and not appointing a manager until just a few weeks before the first game did we? I know I didn't anyway. So I think that our cup runs this year have been a welcome distraction, and a good way of showing that we mean business.

  5. Some help please guys... A mate asked me to help him wipe his dell laptop and reinstall XP so yesterday I did just that, using the XP disk that came with his laptop. I have done this loads of times before on various machines so didn't envisage any problems. Anyway, after following the normal procedure: deleting existing partitions, formating in NTFS and running windows setup; after it finished copying all the files, I expected it to set up Windows as normal, ie - go through the usual configuration routine. But when the computer re-booted it just went back to the delete/create partition screen again. when I tried to start the setup again, it tells me that I am trying to install Windows on a partiton that already has an OS on it and do I wish to continue, but when I exit it tells me that setup is not complete, and when I change the boot sequence back to HDD as first boot device it can't recognise a valid OS. Any ideas?
  6. I'm not surprised for one second that the PL would consider this, to protect their brand image they would probably try anything as football is so corrupt. But can you imagine the the lawsuits from other clubs who have been punished for financial mismanagement? I don't think it will happen. Even the PL, the lords of the corrupt football industry in this country, would not do something which will open them up to the kind of backlash that it is sure to create.
  7. I would also consider things like... Cost of domain registration Cost of domain hosting Webspace allowance Speed restrictions for various protocols during peak/off-peak times.
  8. Just stick a '7UP' logo on the side and it woule be hard to tell the difference.
  9. I think it stands to reason that MK Dons support is pretty crap. Think about it; prior to their being 'created' from the ashes of Wimbledon, most football fans living in Milton Keynes would have been supporters of other clubs. Northampton is just up the road, places like Luton and Coventry are not far. I imagine also that lots of people used the fact that their home town had no league team (if an excuse were needed) to jump on the Man Utd/Liverpool/Chelsea glory-hunting bandwagons. These people aren't just going to stop supporting their teams just because a new one has started in their town. It is going to take a couple of generations at least for them to build up a hardcore fan base. In the mean time their stadium is going to be (partially) filled mainly by bored residents of Milton Keynes with nothing better to do on a saturday afternoon. And anybody who has ever been to Milton Keynes, god-awful, soulless, depressing, 'middle-england' suburban hell-hole that it is, will probably agree with me that there genuinely isn't anything better to do there.
  10. Yeah I think you are absolutely right in this respect. Remember that BoB was (at the time anyway, not sure if it has been surpassed yet) the most expensive TV show ever made, with a budget of more than £80m. To attempt to do something similar but at a fraction of the cost (which it would surely be if it were made by a British company) could be disastrous if the effects and production values are not up to standard.
  11. This despite the fact that Chanrai has already said he hopes that HMRC will work with them to come to a solution. Translation: We haven't got a pot to p1ss in and we're hoping to convince HMRC to back down or at least adjourn the hearing so we don't have to pay them yet. This poster needs to pour himself a long glass of reality methinks.
  12. To find a true story of heroism that would be perfect for what you are suggesting Crab, then look no further than another of Stephen E Ambrose's books: Pegasus Bridge. The story of Major John Howard and the British 6th Airbourne's assault and capture of the bridges at Ranville the night before D-Day is an incredible story of success against all odds, and very few people truly realise the importance of the success of that mission. Had it failed, the outcome of Operation Overlord would have been very different. Maybe we should start campaigning to some British film-makers to make it happen.
  13. Well, they weren't playing too badly before they had to sell their most valuable players and repalce them with low-value loanees and frees.
  14. That's assuming they haven't pulled the plug on it again though
  15. http://http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/portsmouth-confirm-yet-another-takeover-1889332.html Some very worrying points about this article.... Wasn't that SBT's remit? Good luck trying to find somebody stupid enough to buy into a sinking ship. Just in case any pompey fans were genuinely thinking that this move is good news for the club. Keeping Storrie will not solve any of their problems IMO.
  16. I'll probably be driving home and will therefore miss this historic occasion :-(
  17. Is that in case pompey do get wound up on the 10th and we end up playing against our reserve team instead?
  18. I've been away since saturday morning and don't have time to trawl through the seemingly hundreds of new posts since I was last online. Can anyone summarise the weekends goings-on for me?
  19. http://http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/portsmouth-wages-rest-on-kaboul-deal-1883327.html Ermm, I've got news for you Avram. You already ARE in trouble - player sales or no player sales.
  20. In which case I hope he plays. I remember watching the players coming out of the tunnel for that game on TV and Antti had a look on his face similar to a rabbit caught in headlights.
  21. And......????
  22. I don't know. Last time Saints v Pompey in the cup was shown on telly, we won 2-1 if I remember rightly.
  23. Is this the very same Harry Redknapp who only the other day was quoted as saying that Spurs would have to break their exisitng wage structure to bring Ruud Van Nistelrooy to WHL? Doesn't know what his players are earning? He obviously studied hard at the Peter Storrie school of bullsh1tting the public!
  24. Try now. I saw what I did wrong.
  25. Just in case anybody was still in any doubt...... http://news.uk.msn.com/uk/articles.aspx?cp-documentid=151859102
