Where do all the odd socks go when you lose them?

You will find that Sheffield has changed beyond recognition since the early 90s.

Which one is Ant and which one is Dec? 20 bloody years they have been on our TVs and I still don't have a clue.

It scares the bejeesus out of me to think that Palin may one day end up with her finger on the launch button of the world's biggest nuclear arsenal. What worries me even more is that there are millions of Americans who genuinely believe she would make a good president

Not quite... Buddhism is not a theistic religion. The Buddha himself was a man and made no claim to be anything else. Buddhism only teaches a particular way of life centered around the rejection of materialism and the search for enlightenment. Whereas Catholicism demands that you believe some cosmic Jewish zombie can make you live forever if you symbolically eat of his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so that he can remove and evil spirit that is present in mankind because some rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat fruit from a magic tree.

I met my girlfriend in a small field in the middle of an industrial estate in Sheffield at about 2am on a sunday morning.

I think he's referring to the fact that gay people do not consciously 'choose' to be gay, despite what you may think.

You state that if the church was to modernise and change its stance on certain things then there would be no Catholic religion, which I understand perfectly, but you then go on to say that you yourself do not hold the same views on subjects like contraception. Far be it from me to knock your (or anyone else's) beliefs but I was wondering how, as a practising Catholic, you manage to reconcile the fact that you hold beliefs which are completely contradictory to that which is taught by the church?

Seasick steve - Big Chill 2007 went along with some mates, had no idea who he was or what he did. Never been a huge fan of blues and I wasn't expecting great things when I saw this old dude in dungarees looking like Uncle Jesse from the Dukes of Hazzard wander on stage with a knackered old guitar sporting only 3 strings. I was utterly blown away by his sheer stage presence despite his appearance, and when you read about the life this guy has lead you realise that his lyrics are all completely from the heart (as all good blues should be). Would recommend to anybody, even if you're not a fan of that genre, to go along and catch one of his gigs if you get the chance. Portishead - Manchester Apollo 2008 Absolutely loved Portishead from the very first time I heard 'Numb' when Laurent Garnier dropped it into his now-legendary radio 1 essential mix in 1994. Never heard anything like it before so I made a point of finding out who it was by and promptly went out and bought a copy of Dummy: an album with which I still have a love affair to this day. I remember watching a video of a live show they did in New York with a full orchestra and wishing that someday I would get to see them live, but I didn't think I would ever get the chance when they split after their second album. So when I heard they were recording a new album and playing at the Apollo - their first UK gig for over 8 years - I had no problem paying OTT price for a pair of tickets off a tout site for me and my GF who also loves them. It was actually breathtaking. Beth came on stage and literally opened up her soul to the microphone, so much so that for most of the gig I had a lump in my throat and I left feeling emotionally drained; it was almost as if I had been crying for the last two hours. In fact, I'm getting shivers down my spine just thinking about it as I type this.

Linksys WAG-54GS ADSL Router Stopped Working!
Sheaf Saint replied to St Chalet's topic in Technology Chat
That's weird. As far as I know your ISP shouldn't be just migrating you onto 21CN without informing you. We've had loads of trouble with it so far due to the amount of people using Netgear routers that don't cope very well with ADSL2+ due to th error-correction, and we end up having to send out new routers FOC. Diagnosing faults is a lot harder as well. On the plus side, as long as you are close enough to the exchnage then you should be getting much faster download speeds. -
As Tim Minchin so eloquently puts it... F*** the Motherf***er!

When did that ever bother them before???

Then with a depressing inevitability she will have her own chat show and end up selling her own brand of perfume and clothing. There are no depths to which the media of this country will not sink to give celebrity status to untalented nobodies.

Is that the friendly bunch of folk who declared that all the people who died in the Tsunami in 2004 deserved to die because they were non-believers, and that all homosexual people should be executed? Surprised they haven't turned their attention to his already really.

AFAIK, the myth came about during a televised prem game against Arsenal a few years ago when the team were getting d1cked on the pitch so the fans sat near the cameras decided to sing non-stop instead of watching their team getting a mauling. This gave the impression that all Pompey fans are hugely passionate and will sing their hearts out for the team despite what may be happening on the pitch. Certain aspects of the media picked up on this and perpetuated the idea, and it has since become received wisdom when in fact the reality is somewhat different.

I was working in teleoms at the time and I along with 3 or 4 othes were on a huge system installation at a printers firm in Acton. We were running some cables in an office where they had Radio 2 on and the first thing we heard was Steve Wright say that they were getting reports of a plane hitting the WTC. My immediate thought was that it was just a light aircraft and I joked to my mate that the pilot must have been blind if he didn't see it. Then the details started coming through and all the employees of the printers congregated in the MD's office where he had a TV set up. One guy was really concerned as his sister lived in New York and he couldn't get through to her to check she was OK. I remember explaining to him that it was most likely because everyone had the same idea and the Manhattan exchange couldn't cope with the increased traffic - and so it proved, as I remember watching a documentary about the AT&T exchange in Manhattan and how it basically went into meltdown on 9/11. Driving back into London the following day was eerie. Never seen it so quiet at rush hour as all flights were grounded and lots of businesses closed for the day.

Or even just Scunny which is what everyone up this way calls it anyway.

AS the OP quite rightly states, there is no law anywhere which says that this cannot take place, and as far as I'm aware nobody has told this Pastor Jones that he can't do what he is planning. But that isn't the real issue here is it... I have been struggling to think myself just what single bit of good can come from this, and the conclusion I inevitably come to is that there isn't any. All it will serve to do is fuel the fires (pardon the pun) of extremism and generate more anti-western feeling amongst those who already see the west as being oppressive of Islam. It is a safe bet that video footage of the burning Qurans will end up in Taleban/Al-Qaeda propaganda videos accompanied by the slogan "Look what the evil western imperialists think of our sacred texts" or along those lines. The US commander in Afghanistan has already gone on record stating that he believes it will put the lives of US service men and women at risk, and if this pathetic little attention-seeker cannot bring himself to listen to this advice and goes ahead anyway, then there are probably some good grounds for him to arrested and tried on charges of treason for deliberately putting his countrymen in harms way in a theatre of war. If Pastor Terry Jones really wants to discredit a religion then he would be better off taking a leaf out of the book of his namesake and the film that he and his cohorts released in 1979.

And you know this how exactly???

Evil or acceptable? Are you serious? In what twisted version of reality could that ever be deemed as acceptable?

Seemed to work OK for Norwich last season.

Having lived in Sheffield for the last six years I have to concur. He's obviously totally oblivious to the vast difference between a Sheffield accent and a Baaaarnsley accent.

Went to see Inception yesterday. Can't be arsed to write a full review so I'll be brief. Good concept, poorly executed. Unlikable characters and a predictable ending. The idea would have worked better as an independent film rather than a hollywood blockbuster. Some impressive visual treats but overall unsatisfying. 6/10.

So you're upset that someone had the cheek to have a go at you for hitting him with your arm because he nearly (but didn't) hit you. Hmmmm. To be honest MB, if I was riding past and managed to NOT hit you and you decided to hit me with your arm in response to me not hitting you, I think I would probably have a go at you as well.

Not really surprising and I'm not too downhearted about the result as I always think that opening day results are meaningless. But where was the effort and desire? It looked like some of the players were treating it as a pre-season friendly in the second half. Lallana made a massive difference when he came on so it's important he stays fit throughout the season as we will miss him hugely if he gets injured.
