I haven't read the rest of the thread so someone else may have alr4eady replied to this. If so I'm sorry. Asking why we haven't cured the common cold or cancer should a massive misunderstanding of the nature of these diseases. Cancer is undifferentiated uncontrolled cell growth. This means, for example that if a cell in you lungs 'becomes' cancerous then it mean that it will start to rapidly divide and no longer function as a lung cell. The tumor is just a mass of dividing cells that can carry out none of the function sof the cells they originated from. This could happen for many reason. In many cases medicine thinks that it occurs due to a mutation to one a family of genes contained in all our cells that have been named tumor suppressor genes. They are called this because when functioning correctly they enable the cell to know when to divide and when not to. Every time a cell copies its self, which during the course of a human life will happen millions of times there is a small chance that a mistake could be made. The more a cell divides, the higher the chance that a mistake could be made. We only discovered the whole genome a few years ago (and there is still lots of gaps) and it will take many many more years of research to establish which genes are involved in cell growth and then even longer to work out how these genes interact with each other. Only then will we be able think about how to use this information to help benefit the human race. I really don't think that a pharmaceutical company would 'sit' on research like this. Do you realise how much money there is in the drug market. Hundreds of billions. Also, most cancer is suffered by people in the west where population growth is not a problem and they can afford to buy these drugs. I'm sorry for the lenght of the post. I was going to explain the absence of the cold but have allready gone on to much.

I would like to see that too. It sounds like they played very well on Sat. Confidence should be very high. There is no point messing around with it. I would like Pekhart (sp) to com on for the last 20-30 mins so we can see what he can do.

Get in!!!!

The OS says that he came on at half time

What version of IE are you using?

I am sorry happy to come home, turn on the PC and read about 3 point being won. Interesting that its so much quieter on her after a win then when we loose. What does Alpine have to say
-
If the game is a little dull I do recommend thinking about leaving a little early. It took forever to get back to the tube. We had to queue outside the tube station for for over 30 mins.

You forgot to add the world record holder and generally accpeted best female long distance runner ever. I think people are being to quick to jump on the Paula bashing band wagon. Using the IOC points system, her marathon world record is apparently comparable to her running a 9.75 100m. That goes to show how imppressive an athlete she really is. Its just very unfortunate that during her career that her two worst periods for form fitness and fallen during olympic years. I agree that the media gave her too much attention compared to our other runners but you can hardly blame her for that.

I did say I ahd been drinking. I thought it was a bit further behind. A very good proformance considering her fall. I certainly wouyldn't want to attempt any running with a broken rib. They reallly hurt
-
She finished as well. Not that far behind Paula, within 10 mins I think. It was late and I ahd been drinking so cant be sure

I really wish that you would stop presenting your opinions as fact. Yes you believe it to be the case but that does not make it so. I am not trying to defend Lowe/Wilde/anyone else but am fed up with people on this board spouting their own opinions as if they are fact when they have no way of knowing what the facts are.

I would say he was stupid, not unlucky. Professional sportsmen should not be taking cocaine.

I agree. I really hope this speculation is all internet BS

I signed up ages for beta testing ages ago as well and haven't been accepted. It looks like it's going to be quite fun, and free. My favorite price

I have been asked by my girlfriend to research what would be a good digital camera for her to buy as a present. It's been a while since I had to buy one. Does anyone who has bought one recently have any recomendations? The budget is £70-100.

I'm not finding it too bad really. What did you upgrade too?
-
Why? Have you read any of his work?
-
Dawkins explains this very well
-
No, each gene is interested in making sure it is passed on to the next generation. There are some gene families (such as the Hox genes) are nearly the same in all animals. Our genes do not care about the survival of our species, only about there own survival (although not literally, as they cant think ) Anyone interested should check out books by Richard Dawkins. The Selfish Gene and The Extended Phenotype are both very good.

The saint_stevo Saints Prediction thread 08/09

I think 1-2 to brum -
Just what I was going to say. It may sound empty but the sole purpose of life for any organism on the planet is to reproduce and to pass our genes on to their next vehicle

What browser are you using. I have problems logging in to sites on my P1i using opera mobile but everything works fine with opera mini
