I agree to a certain extent but when he is picked week after week as our main striker, then he should be doing better. He's 21 now, not a raw teenager. People are quick to get on Pekhart and Robertson's back but they are both younger than McG.

I think, doing fine is an exageration. Up until November they were doing OK but should have been doing much better. The last 6 weeks of Burley's reign and the whole of Dodd and Gorman's was a complete disaster and we nosedived towards relegation with confidence on the floor. NP restored confidence in players like Euell and brought in Richard Wright, Lucketti and Perry and turned it around. BUT this thread is not about NP, it's about Poortvliet and whether we have confidence in him. I personally have lost confidence because he is not getting the best out of the team he has available because he can not organise his defence and he is unable or unwilling to change tactics to suit the situation. He is a one trick pony.

I think by pidgeon holing positions you are more in danger of someone like MLT not being in the team. Is he the best RMF player? By your rules, no! Terry Paine is. Is he in the best CMF positions? Not IMO Allan Ball and Jimmy Case would take those. Would he be the best at LMF? No, John Sydenham or David Armstrong would IMO. Would he be in the two main striker roles? Not IMO, Ron Davies, Mick Channon and Kevin Keegan would be fighting for those. Is he the best player to ever play for Saints? Too Right!! But he didn't actually have a certain position. Neither a Striker, nor a Midfielder. Early days, in Nicholl's team he started on the right wing but for most of his career he had a free role (like Gerrard currently plays for Liverpool), which is one of the reasons Branfoot could never find a place in his team for MLT. If you had said nominate your 4 best midfield players then MLT would have been top of the pile and definately been in the A team.

The facts are: we have a team full of 17-23 year olds, some very talented, some adequate and others not so good and a few not good enough. The question should be: is the current manager getting the best out of the players available? I can not believe that he is and do not accept that they are all sh!t and therefore we have to accept 4th from bottom is best we can hope for. Jan is a one trick pony. Any decent tactician knows exactly how to nullify our system. And when they do, Jan does not have a 'Plan B' or have the nous to try something different. He may be a decent coach? (no proof ever way) but is clueless in the top job and must be replaced.

The easiest way to have done this, would have been for everyone to nominate a midfield 4 and set up a vote on e.g. the 15 most nominated (if the software allows). Then the four with the most votes would have the 'A' Team squad places, 5-8 inclusive, the 'B' Team places. The actual positions could have been worked out after the top 8 had been selected.

Regardless of who the manager (or head coach) is, it is their job to get the very best out of the players that are available. To organise them into a unit, to make every player absolutely sure of their jobs before they go out on the pitch, to make sure they're focused, to motivate them, to give them a kick up the ars* when it is needed or to encourage and put their arm around them when that is needed. It is their job to have the tactics to make the most of the teams strengths and focus on the oppositions weaknesses and if it is not working then he is obliged to change it. Jan is not that man!! He has one tactic that 9 times out of 10 does not work and he is either unwilling or incapable of changing things and week after week his substitutions if anything, are detrimental to the team.

I can't vote for that very reason. Both AB and KK would be in my A team. Danny Wallace would be in my B Team but on the other wing. I know nothing about Eric Day and although Ronnie Ekelund and Jo Tessem were good players for us, I can't believe they were the second best right-sided players to ever play for us.

I was ready to cut him some slack because I believed some of the spin about him being able to organise and motivate young players into playing to their full potential. Now, maybe he is and their full potential isn't up to much, or he his not up to the job. Ever way the results speak for themselves and if something doesn't change soon we are going down. Like another thread states, it's not his fault that he is in this position. Lowe hired him. However I have lost whatever confidence I had in him at the start of the season, and IMO we need a new British manager, with plenty of CCC experience ASAP or we're doomed.

This is quite confusing, because pre-squad numbers, the outside right/right winger/right midfielder of a 4-2-4 or 4-4-2 wore the number seven shirt. If this has gone to Terry Paine and I'm not saying he's not worthy, then where would Kevin Keegan and Matt Le Tiss fit in?

It's about time we started looking at other forms of sponsorship. I think we are one of the few in this league that does not have a secondary shirt sponsor (above or below the number on the back of the shirt). We currently do not have a stadium sponsor and although this was not popular, when the club needs money like never before, it worth investigating, as is stand sponsorship. We could have Flybe on the front, Easyjet on the back, play at the Ryanair stadium and sing our hearts out from the BMI Baby Northam Stand, the Thomsonfly Kingsland and the Jet2.com Itchen Stand. May be not, but you get my drift!!

Exactly, less than 4.5 league appearances doesn't equate to vital team member. Much too early to tell if he is the real deal or not. It's like Alex Pearce being seen as a world beater after 2.5 games.

Not technically but the same difference to us, except we wouldn't be thrown out the comp for playing him. There won't be a clause in the contract, there's no need. They either let him play or not. But why would they want to jeopardise their own cup run by making a player (who by the way, could be back with them within 3 weeks of the tie) unavailable?
