That are also plenty of people who don't claim benefits they're entitled to, I don't know the updated figures, but if it's anything like in 2012 then there's several billion pounds of benefits that go unclaimed. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-17139088

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-33447991 Reducing the rate of tax relief for landlords is a small start to tackling housing affordability however it's fairly small reduction and so gradual that it appears to be nothing more than token gesture to give the budget some balance. It doesn't go far enough in tackling the housing bubble the BoE has warned of. I can't understand what justification there is to effectively subsidise private landlords in the first place, and to be honest I don't think there should even be such things as buy-to-let mortgages in the first place.

Can you point out a time in the country's entire history when our population wasn't increasing (excluding world wars & plague). To think that we won't need be building new housing pretty stupid. 40,000 new social homes doesn't sound like nearly enough especially at the rate they're being sold off. This is a country of 60 odd million, that's going to be spread extremely thinly.
  5. Exactly this. We've signed far more players this transfer window than we've sold. (sold one, probably rising to 2). It looks like Saints have actually acted fast to secure 2 young international players on cut price deals - they've clearly done their research. Yes a few have got away i.e. Toby. Both Lovren & Toby were similar kinds of transfers to the ones we've already made this summer, young internationals for good european sides at established clubs. I thought it would be tough to replace Lovren but we got someone in who was possibly better, so I'm confident we can do the same again. We also have a 7th place finish and European football to help lure new signings. Also how bad are the injuries to Bertrand & Forster? I though Bertrand would miss the first few games and Forster out until around christmas but people seem to have written them off for the whole season.
  6. Do you mean that clubs can claim back the wages of players when they're injured from their insurance policies?

It's a weird one, gut reaction says we ****ed up big time with this. Did we ever actually make a bid for him? We can't have too much to complain about if we had him here for a whole season and then never actually excised our option to buy him. And that we should have moved for him months ago. However on reflection I suppose we were worried that any bid from ourselves would cause Athetico to active their cancel clause and that we were therefore waiting until their deadline elapsed and then we'd have a small window of opportunity in which to sign him for the pre agreed fee. And I guess this is why we're threatening legal action, as we felt we still had an exclusive period in which to speak to the player and Athletico Madrid then accept a bigger offer and let him talk to a wealthy club. Once that's happened we didn't stand much chance as even if we'd made a bid the player can simply turn down the contract and then Athletico can put him on the open market. We need better loan contracts in place next time which could be why our CFO left. Our defence is starting to look more and more mediocre for the start of the season.
  8. *but only British people mind. And why do it just for terrorist attacks, why not for victims of motorway pile ups, or gas explosions, or house fires....?
  9. Thought it might be nice to keep the thread on topic, you must have about have a dozen anti-immigration threads already.
  10. Maybe immigration's not to blame for everything? Can't there be a debate in the lounge that doesn't descend into an immigration debate. If you want to say that they're partly to blame then, then fine that's your opinion. What else is to blame then? Minimum wage too low? Not enough regulation of big employers? You're constantly using immigrants as scapegoats and using them a smokescreen instead of debating the real issues as was being done up until this point as you don't want to admit that there might be more important things to address other than some foreign people being aloud to live here. This is a thread about the country's largest private employers paying salaries below the living wage, meaning that the government has to top us those wages. It's quite a major flaw which might be solved by raising the minimum wage and to some extent sorting out the housing market so that it's not continually sky rocketing, making the living wage stretch further and further. Speaking of bad employers I see that amazon is planning to open a distribution centre in Hedge End: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/13371631.New_Amazon_base_set_to_bring_160_jobs_to_Hampshire/ An article about why they're bad from none other than the torygraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/tax/10060229/Amazon-received-more-money-from-UK-grants-than-it-paid-in-corporation-tax.html Also an interesting layman's terms explanation of the housing market here (again with no mention of immigrants):
  11. The first thing that comes up when you type profit into Google: "'Profit' A financial benefit that is realized when the amount of revenue gained from a business activity exceeds the expenses, costs and taxes needed to sustain the activity." It's perfectly possible to run a company and break even. Profits are what's left for the owners of the company after all expenses, (i.e. wages & pensions). I'd imagine they typically get spent on luxuries for the tiny minority at the top of the pyramid, speed boats, houses abroad, that type of thing. In the olden days there was also a thing called philanthropy where occasionally wealthy individuals would use their profits for good causes and charitable endeavours. I think Bill Gates is one of the few remaining philanthropists although his company, microsoft, is based in the USA.

If this were to happen and there was a breach of contract and he ended up at Spurs. Then maybe the transfer would a) not be ratified/signed off by the FA/Premier League or whoever, or b) he signs for Spurs but is ineligible to play for them due to an ownership dispute etc.
  13. From the BBC article it sounds as if it's pretty close to being done. Would probably be better than Rameriez, Tadic & Davis.
  14. Would have hoped that Osvaldo had caused enough trouble that he'd have been in breach of his contract and we'd have been able to terminate it without paying it out. (and that we hadn't done this previously as we were hopefully recoup some of his transfer fee). And if we are still paying him a severance of sorts, would have hoped that these payments would cease once he found employment again elsewhere. Although I know nothing about employment contracts, so have no idea whether either of those are realistic scenarios.

But then you'll moan that they're all coming over here to get jobs. Too much of the global economy is built on credit (debt) - I think this version of capitalism is starting to show it's not working very well and there ought to be an inquiry.
  16. Thanks, need all the votes we can get.
  17. One more day left to vote if anyone's interested? Here's the project featured in the echo: http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/13343710.Is_turning_these_British_icons_into_art_galleries_a_good_call_/?ref=twtrec And here's the link to vote (we're currently 13th and need just a few more votes to ensure we finish in the top 15 that get funded): https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/k6-gallery-3/
  18. Another greedy one trying to get his hands on your job/benefits/wife/culture etc? http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jun/19/stowaway-fell-to-death-plane-london-shop-heathrow-richmond?CMP=fb_gu
  19. There's something wrong with you if you think that people would cling to the underside of a lorry to get across a boarder if they were anything other than desperate. Even leaving everything and travelling across Africa and right through Europe to get the UK in the way that they are sounds pretty desperate.
  20. That's not a riot, that's human desperation. Reminds me of this incident: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/illegal-immigrant-crushed-death-after-4803184 And in accordance with British selfishness 'a passerby stopped and pulled the injured man to the side of the road but then mysteriously drove off.' Leaving him to die.
  21. Why on earth would it matter what their wives look like? They are taken after all. Not sure Pelle, Austin or their partners - whoever they are, appreciate you perving on them.
  22. Here's a couple of other's that have been done up north: http://www.galleryonthegreen.org.uk/ https://portylightbox.wordpress.com/
  23. Thanks I've often thought bus shelters would be an interesting one as well. I just like that with BT's 'adopt a kiosk' scheme there's an opportunity to create an official space for art that the council won't come along and 'clean up' as we'd have ownership over the space. I quite like the idea of this exhibition that was on in Exeter a few years back as part of Unexpected Festival. All the photos in the exhibition were displayed in bus shelters around the city.
  24. We've got applications in for another couple of grants, but this one's by far the biggest. Esmee Fairbairn's one that I've had my eye on. I'll take a look at the other links - thanks for sharing them. In terms of vandalism - I think we're just going to have to cross our fingers and hope that people appreciate that we're trying to do something good and don't vandalise them. Some of the money raised will be kept aside for maintenance of the phone boxes. If it does become an issue then we've applied to have locks fitted to them, although this was more so that we could also have outward facing exhibitions like this one in Edinburgh https://portylightbox.wordpress.com/.But it does offer the extra security should we need it. And in terms of artwork getting stolen - the main plan at present is to have a simple free standing structure that fits snuggly inside the phone boxes that we can either screw down framed artwork to or paste artwork to - in both cases we'd refrain from using original artworks and would use prints (of photos, illustrations etc). https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/k6-gallery-3/
  25. I'm planning to open a art new gallery in Southampton, it will be pretty small as it's going to be in a couple of phone boxes. We've got a small grant for it but hoping to get this other one which would fund it for a few years but we need to get public votes in order to be awarded it. It would be free to visit and should be open 24/7. Hoping that anyone here interested art, culture or a good local community project might take a couple of mins to sign-up and vote for it. https://foundation.onefamily.com/projects/k6-gallery-3/ We're on facebook & twitter (/K6GallerySoton & @K6_Gallery) for anyone interested in following the project. Still working on a proper website though.
