WBA v Saints - 5th Round FA Cup Thread
Hamilton Saint replied to Edmonton Saint's topic in The Saints
Yes; 1-1 draw on Feb 14th. Saints won the replay 4-0 on the 17th. -
Ha! ha!

"Yes, I may be blind, but you are deaf."
-
Well, he was signed originally to back up striker David Hirst, who got injured frequently. He was moved to the midfield because of his apparent inability to put the ball in the net.
-
Precisely. He was hopeless. 2 goals in 52 appearances. A worse scoring record than Shane Long!
-
I suppose it's a matter of what you're used to. To my ear, he doesn't have an American drawl at all.
-
A few people here have referred to Krueger as a Yank. He's not. He is Canadian-born. I presume he has dual Canadian and German citizenship. Most of his working life has been in Europe.

Excellent performance. Who saw that coming? Good to see the team playing with some spirit and confidence again. Three things stood out for me: 1) having a confident goalie, who was willing, for example, to stride out and grab a high corner kick; 2) Saints players constantly challenging the opposition's man on the ball; 3) how quickly the midfield slotted the ball through to the attack, with no aimless dithering.

1) I don't know about you, but when I was a kid in primary school, English language study was usually separated into Reading and Writing. Comprehension was considered an element of Reading. Nonetheless, Reading 101 and Comprehension 101 can be considered synonymous in this situation. 2) The primary meaning of 'to state' is to express an opinion, or outline a set of facts, verbally or in writing. Merely to post a newspaper article—sharing someone else's opinions, or statements of fact—is not to make a statement of one's own. 3) It doesn't make sense to say that "he is a silly boy for being charged with this offense", since he was not responsible for being charged. Clearly, then, he must be silly for behaving in the manner that led to him being charged. Therefore, to call him "a silly boy" is to imply, logically, that he is guilty of the charge being made.

Fine. You might find it funny, but I find it disturbing that he is alleged to have been carrying a concealed weapon. Nonetheless, my original point was not addressed at you, but merely to criticize a misreading by someone else of what you had posted. [And if you care to re-read what I posted, by the way, you will see that I didn't say that "he may be innocent".] Me being pedantic again, I suppose.
-
You'd rather be flippant and dismissive about a situation that is serious. Well, each to his own.
-
Reading 101. The OP did not state "that he had been charged". He posted a Daily Mail article. As for there "being no implication of anything else", what would you think the statement "a bit of a silly boy" implies—and the statement that he "has been living up to his name"?

I was watching on TV. Yes, he was there.

Thanks for this. It was a long time ago!

I used to run down to the newsagent on Hollybank Estate in Hythe to get mine on Saturday evenings (early 60s). And when I was at boarding school later in Shropshire my mother often wrapped it in brown paper and sent it to me in the post. As I recall it there was pretty much a full description of the game spread over the front and back pages.

Strikers or goal-scorers? Gareth Bale and Matt Le Tissier were mid-fielders. Charlie Austin? He's only been here for five minutes. How about George O'Brien?
-
Of course: no one wants to be defeated.

Technical question: I'm not getting the audio "live commentary" via Saints website. Had this problem once before and it had to do with reloading the latest version of Adobe Flash Player. Tried that but hearing nothing. I've tried using Firefox and Chrome, but nothing. Any ideas? Thanks.

There is a difference between the justified criticism of a player who has been under-perfoming and scapegoating. What I mean by scapegoating is an unreasonable level of vitriol and abuse that starts with a few people and then builds to a kind of piling-on. It has a bullying element—fans venting their growing frustration with the team in general by focusing blame and anger on one or two specific players. You can recognize it when there is a shift from criticizing the player's performances to making assumptions about their general attitude and personal behaviour (recent comments about Bertrand's unacceptable "attitude" are a good example of that).
-
Par for the course for this site. There are always a couple of scapegoats each season.

Yes, those are reasonable predictions, for those of us who are optimistic. Considerations: -- for a number of years, now, we have gone into a slump in December (but given that we've already had our slump, maybe things will be different this season!) -- apart from the long-term injury to Matt Targett, we are lucky to be injury-free at the moment (which is quite amazing)—with Lemina a significant return to the squad -- we face five of the top six in the table (and four of those are away games!)—perhaps our squad will respond with a period of intense application and discipline! -- six of the ten games are away, and our away form is worse than our home form -- in the same fixtures last season (no Huddersfield game), we won at home to Leicester, won away at Bournemouth and Watford, drew at Man City, lost at home to Arsenal and Crystal Palace, and lost away at Chelsea, Spurs and Man Utd. (for a total of 10 points from nine games) In summary, for us glass-half-full types, 12 points seems doable. And if we spring a surprise or two, we might manage 15.

Is he related to Glenn?
