I'd agree with this. The movie studios are there to make money and everything else is subsidiary to that. It's a shame but that's the way it is. Having said that it would be interesting to see a distributer spending half the budget that a remake would cost on marketing the original and see if that was more cost effective. I feel sorry for Americans who have been labelled too thick to follow a subtitled film (or a film not based in the US, with US actors) before they get much of a chance.

Well you can only go on what you've seen but it seems like Boothroyd is a decent manager and doesn't need a lot of money. He seems to be able to motivate a team as well which is nice. The football maybe a bit direct but whenever Watford played us they scored goals and frankly at the moment I'd take less tippy tappy football and a few more goals f'sure. As an outsider it did seem as if Boothroyd was a victim of his own success - getting Watford promoted on a shoe string and then being blamed when a very poor side inevitably struggled in the premiership.

Well I've had a think and can't really narrow it down to just one so instead I'll list a few. Lord of the Rings - I loved this as a teenager, it was the first book I cared about, and must have read it about 4 or 5 times. Tried to read it after a gap of 15 years or so when the first film came out and just couldn't get on with it at all. It just seemed really dense and impentetreble but I'll include it as at the time I just couldn't put it down. One flew over the cuckoo's nest - Just brilliant and even if you've seen the film first it doesn't matter. The characters (particularly the Chief and Harding) are much better in the book and the ending is more uplifting. Wild Swans - Fantastic account of three generations of chinese women. Sophie's world - great introduction to western philosophy and although it might be a bit simplistic it really made me want to explore further. The Stand - I like this one better than any other King book. Good fun if you like post apocalyptic nightmares. Day of the Triffids - John Wyndham books are really easy to read and if I'm not in the mood to concentrate much then this is the ideal kind of book to pick up. It's even better if you've seen the BBC TV series before. Harry and the Dinosaurs - Pretty much sums up the human condition and poses all the big questions. It does require a lot of effort on the part of the reader and shouldn't be approached lightly. I think most readers will see it on a par with Ulysses but believe me if you get to the end then it's really worth it.

Great choice and it would have been mine as well. Grapes of wrath maybe in that list? Definitely fits in. Yes, Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is superb. Have you tried Emile Zola's "Germinal"? It's pretty much the French version and excellent. Mind you it is about 700 pages of sheer unremitting poverty and struggle during a french miner's strike but as a story it's gripping. I'll post my revised recommendation when I've had a proper think about it.

Well as it's an Eastleigh testimonial for an Eastleigh player/coach who happened to start his career at Saints so I think it's only right that Eastleigh fans judge whether it's right for him to have a testimonial. Certainly he doesn't deserve a saints one but no one is saying he does. Whether he deserves one at all? The fans will decide that. I guess he didn't earn a hell of a lot in his short lived career so it's not like he'll never have to work again but the money he earns will make life easier. Ultimately it's up to the people who choose to go. I'm not an Eastleigh fan so it's not for me to judge but I'm guessing even a full house won't earn him that much. I hope he has a good day though.

Churches should pay. I think the chaplains do a good job and provide a decent service but it's not something the state should pay for. As an aside if this was in America wouldn't the state be trying to hand over running the hospitals to the churches? They do that with prisons and other state services.
