…but Villa are not a big club so why would the ref be biased towards them?
-
It's just wishful thinking, we are not even playing the two new players that just arrived so why should anybody expect that more arrivals would be able to jump straight into the first team and make a huge impact.

After this unwittingly inept and disjointed performance it is hard to see where Saints go next. Despite the change of management and style any pattern of play remains indiscernible and elusive. Time surely is running out. It is true we have a few highly talented players but equally we continue to rely on too many journeymen stalwarts who have never convinced at this level. If today's performance was indicative of something near our best then relegation is a near certainty. The clamour for a new striker is a last desperate cry for help from fans who know but cannot come to terms with the fact that we are collectively as a management team and squad of players no longer good enough to stay in this division. I sensed today that this was our last chance saloon, we were put to the test and failed. From my seat in the Kingsland there was little to warm the chilly day and few of my colleagues looked anything other than thoroughly bewildered and dejected. Acceptance is replacing belief and that is proving to be a very painful transition

Obviously you didn’t go to the match

My prayers were answered.

Surely it is not just me who fears that re-signing Inge would be an unmitigated morale sapping disaster. True, he had a purple patch while he was here briefly but that has not been replicated at Villa and he is now much older in football terms and less sharp and defenders have worked out his game. Apart from misplaced and naive sentiment for a player who really couldn't give a fishes tit about Southampton Football Club, for what other reason would we want to take on such a huge gamble and lumber ourselves with as sulking hulk of a player. He's gone, lock the door and good riddance!

…but they are all playing regularly under Jones. Seems your prejudices are not in vogue since Floppy left.
-
Doubt it. If he can't get a start for Villa then why on earth would we want him here. Staplewood is not a MaCarthy & Stone sheltered retirement home.

Problem solved, JWP is our new striker! Realistically no striker is going to match his tally of goals this season.

Southampton 0-1 Newcastle League Cup Semi Final 1st Leg
Charlie Wayman replied to Saint_clark's topic in The Saints
We beat Man City on their current form without a quality new CF signing. -
They seem to be the three favourites for the drop, I've had WHU & Bournemouth for ages along with us but we seem to be recovering under Jones.

Jones was very quick to praise Ruben Selles at the final whistle as can be seen right at the end of the highlights video. Must be a very good reason why he made such a public show of affection. Good too that Selles as the outsider has so quickly proved his worth in Jones's set-up, perhaps we will get he best of both worlds. Wonder if the tactical changes after HT giving us a more attacking presence with Lavia further forward and Diallo in a holding role were down to Selles. Not all positive 'though as we suddenly became far more open at the back and the Toffees were through on our goal a number of times before we put the game to bed.

What?????? Back in your box genius.

It's a tough ask but if we put out the team that overran City and put the same boosters in their pre match Red Bull then we may have "wins". A long time since I looked forward to a match as much as this. I'll settle for a point at 0-0 but will be delighted with a 3-0 win

Keeping Track of the Contracts 2024-25
Charlie Wayman replied to Over land and sea's topic in The Saints
It was always assumed that Hasenhuttl was a genius at developing young players and getting the best from them although in retrospect there is little evidence of his success at doing so. Ely always showed glimpses of talent but until recently never got the chance to settle in the team and prove his worth. Now he seems to improve with every game. He was always good off the ball and now his on the ball skills are beginning to have an impact on team performance. Although he had only a cameo role in the defeat of Man City, he seemed able to ghost past players in midfield to set up attacks with ease. There is more to this man than meets the eye and it may be that Jonesey (;-) ) might just have the knack of finding the switch that sets this guy free. I am not only not surprised that Ely might be offered a new contract but am personally delighted. -
Kevin Keegan?

Just not being. Shearer, Wright or Jenas makes him a very good pundit. -

Lots of Humble Pie on menus today up and down the country. The forum’s favourite whipping boys Djenepo, Diallo & Lyanco seem to know what they’re doing after all. Apparently that waste of space Mara can play a bit as well. -
Quite. No longer a question of who was that Charlie Wayman bloke, who was Mick Channon?

Yet the French have this annoying habit of winning the odd World Cup?
-
Don’t forget the Maya Yoshida link. Expect one or two from Japan’s World Cup side to come on board.

Bloody hell! How big do you think England is? He can commute from Manchester and see the family at weekends. It's not as if he will last very long.
-
That's ruled us out on two counts then.

Ah! but is he fit to wear the shirt and do you want to see him in a Saints shirt again?
