Wake-up call, reality check call it what you will we are in the same league as this Chelsea team and we never looked like competing with them. Ok maybe we will never match them for sheer individual quality as it doesn't come cheap and seemingly the West London cossacks have an unlimited pot of gold or is that oil supporting them but we really have to do something in the transfer window and something big? I read that "we will only buy players that will improve us", on today's showing it would be difficult to buy a player who didn't improve us so lamentable were we at times in the second half. We need to spend and spend big if we have ambitions to be anything more than also rans in the PL. As things are right now a loss at Villa and with the inevitable thrashing at Chelsea and probably defeat to Everton to follow we could be bogged down in the bottom three and losing touch. This is not a case of faint hearts, today all our flaws were ruthlessly exposed with many of our players clearly not good enough to compete at the very highest level.

We tried to play them at their - and our - own game in London and got turned over so what do we do? Saturday proved we can't sit back and contain teams so going all defensive isn't the answer either. All Saints supporters who lived and breathed the "27 years" mostly only knew of mid-table mediocrity and occasionally escaping relegation by the skins of our teeth so what would de different? We are a small town team and that's about our place in the scheme of things. Of course, we'd all like things to be better than that but as long as we can banish the fear of relegation as a repetitive feature of every season then many would settle for that at least over the next few years. Europe football doesn't interest me at all and by all accounts doesn't interest very many fans outside Manchester & London judging by attendance's and team selections. Ok so I'm an older fan whose boyhood memories are full of Magpies and Throstles and Wolves who were once great teams but I still get far more kicks from the anticipation of a Wearsiders visit than Steaua Bucharest or Levski Sofias or any number of anonymous football teams from Europe's minor leagues.

Come on lads, show a bit more imagination we don't want other people's misfits and journeymen we want top class young stars-in-the-making of around 22/23. Sterling for starters although one suspects Puncheon is better at the moment, oh and Walcott and I'm serious he'll be on a free soon.

Probably a bit too simplistic. There has been a general all round improvement in our defensive effort probably some new people or thinking behind the scenes rather than player changes or managers working miracles.

This game may well be the decider for Nigel & Co, perhaps only a decisive win good enough. Draw or lose and both results are possible against a stubborn Reading side and Cortese's patience may snap. If he is in the mood to change things around he'll have to decide very soon otherwise like Nigel's late substitutions - nearly always too late to effect the outcome - he will have forfeited the chance of saving us. We are into December and the squeaks are starting to escape. For me this is another 1-1 at best.
