It wasn't a classic attacking display but after a long week that was a great result and we still managed to create much better opportunities than they hull. Toby was a rock.

This is how i saw it. First half it seemed like they were just going to defend deep and try to counter attack. Second half brought on Diouf; upped the intensity, pressed higher up the pitch a lot more. Made it difficult because it meant we couldn't get into a passing rhythm and if we tried to knock it long they won header after header, though Pelle did have some success when he dropped deep to lay it off.

I do wonder with Chambers. Things have been pretty good for him so far, but their fans really turned on Ramsey when he was going through a rough patch. He's a very talented player but there is a lot less margin for error at that football club and we are generally quite forgiving with our academy players if they struggle.

Hesketh gets the third. 3-1 to the mighty Saints at full time, looking forward to seeing some highlights.

Stole some bits from others- but surely it should be to the tune of "it's now or never" Graziano Pelle From Italy Southampton's number 19 He'll take us to the champions league Graziano Pelle Our goal machine.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bloke... Liverpool can chuck all the money they want at that back four but until they start defending better as a team they're going to continue shipping goals like that. Made me laugh the commentators going on about gerrard's goals and assists from last season, last time I checked he's meant to be playing defensive-midfield.

Proud of that performance, deserved more. Wanyama was outstanding, Bertrand very solid and Tadic looks a really exciting player. I'm amazed a fair amount of people on here still don't rate Ward-Prowse. Highly praised for his performance in the bbc and guardian minute-by minutes and on the liverpool forums. Once he gets a couple of goals and becomes more selfish from scoring positions he's going to be a great player for us. Credit to Yoshida who looked very shaky to begin with but managed to regain his composure well. Likewise, Pelle really struggled first half but ended up winning a lot of headers (and chests) towards the end. Once the players get more used to each other's game there is a lot of potential here still.

You can justify each transfer on an individual basis but so many at once is such a risk and completely unprecedented. I guess they're saying they had no choice (again) but you'd hope they could have told Chambers to stay put one more year, maybe played him at centre back to get more game time if that was a concern. Out of interest who do people think will be Clyne's back up now, will Jack Stephens move back to right-back now or is Jason Mccarthy the back up?

Ryan Smith... Worldclass.

Can remember feeling pretty hopeful about Schneiderlin, Holmes and the return of Killer at the start of the dutch duo's season, some good performances against Birmingham and Wolves i think early on. But it all became very depressing very quickly. The Burnley game at the end sticks with me most though. Very strange and surreal atmosphere that day. Wasn't sure what was going to happen after that.

Holland have already sorted out the manager situation so can't be referring to Koeman (Hiddink is coming back).

Swansea have got two pretty good left backs in Ben Davies and Neil Taylor.

A point away is not to be sniffed at but there is a huge rodriguez shaped-hole in our side and sadly i'm not sure we have any solution for that right now. Villa are like our complete antithesis: pace up front, rush everything, not interested in possession. Not the most aesthetically pleasing football (and not surprised they don't pick up many points at home) but just shows you there are many ways to try and get three points.

I agree Gallagher's all round game isn't really there yet but at least he looks like actually stretching opposition defences, no harm in giving him some more experience given how the season is now petering out.

Medel the chilean guy? Thought he played quite well, had probably the hardest job on the pitch having to chase Lallana around. Yanga-Mbiwa was terrible for Newcastle but somehow their defence got even worse after he went off.
-
We seem to really lack a mobile ball winning defensive-midfielder. Guess maybe Henderson can provide this but he seems more box-to-box. Can't think of too many options apart from Cork and Noble though either would be more deserving of a place than Cleverly - not sure what he contributes.
-
It is odd. This guy's been a revelation over there.

Saints turn in a great performance against the league leaders with five academy players playing a part and the first thing said is.. points dropped.

Thought Schneiderlin and Cork both had good games and the defence were rarely troubled until the last five. The major concern yesterday for me was how predictable we were in attack. We should have been looking to use the pace of Rodriguez, Lallana and Shaw to get behind them but instead too often we were ponderous, playing into their hands by slowing play down and delivering cross after cross which McAuley and Olsson dealt with easily. If we press and win the ball high up the pitch as Schneiderlin and Lallana did well at times yesterday, we should be taking advantage of the opposition losing their defensive shape by moving the ball quickly. Lambert was a part of this problem yesterday but not a sole contributor, Rodriguez also had an off game and I thought Lallana was in and out a bit for the first half but grew into the game. Overall though thought we controlled the game pretty well and Ramirez provided that bit of unpredictability and spark that won the game (though he still needs to get used to having less time on the ball). West Brom clearly came for the point so glad we managed to break them down, terrible time-wasting from Foster throughout and Long's whining was incredibly tedious.

Does this explain the punch-up at the end?

I don't think Boruc would have got there but fair enough. Will have to see the third again (though worth noting Kelvin does get beat pretty regularly near post). Anyway thought we were beaten by the better team today sadly. Though we contained them well in the first half, we never really got going offensively (for the second week in a row) which is a bit disappointing. When they sacrificed Essien for Ba i thought that should have been the queue for Morgan and Vic to step up and dominate the midfield area but we didn't really match their intensity - helped partly by Ramires being immune from a card. Osvaldo frustrating again; doesn't seem to have forged any understanding with the other attacking players yet.
-
What did Gazza do wrong? No way Boruc would have saved the second either and the third was Lovren's fault for giving up on Ba.

Who would we be higher under, Adkins or Pochettino?
T.REX replied to Ivan Katalinic's 'tache's topic in The Saints
We averaged a point per game under Adkins. In the reverse fixtures against QPR, Newcastle, City, Norwich, Man U, Everton and Wigan we secured seven points - so again a point per game. However, it's fair to say Newcastle (and arguably QPR) are much tougher propositions now than when we played them earlier in the season. Then you've got to weigh up is consistency better than the 'new manager bounce'. I don't think there's a whole lot in it.
