I'm quite conflicted about this. I like Sims and would like to see him playing regularly; But if he's just going to be sitting on the bench then he's better off playing so long as it isn't for some basket case Championship team - accepting that's always difficult to call before the season starts.

There's a whole world of difference between not giving a toss, and actively trying to get yourself sent off, which is what I witnessed. And this was at a point where he needed game time - any game time.

I only have the evidence of my own eyes. I watched a U23 match where it was clear he didn't want to be there, and looked for all the worls like he was trying to get himself sent off before eventually being hooked. The real issue for me tough, was he couldn't be trusted to play for the team. When he lost the ball we culd all see him work hard to get it back, but it often felt like he did so only to try to do the impossible again. More than one commentator remarked on how he seemed to want to be the best player in the playground - but this is top level football. You can't score a wonder goaleverytime you play which, it seems to me, was all he was interested in doing. Bags of ability, but flawed.

It's hard to argue that since the inception of the black box the club hasn't, in general, signed talent with value above and beyond other clubs. Financially, it has indisputably been a benefit.

People forget how young, and relatively inexperienced Yoshida San was when he joined us. He’s been here for 6 years and is now approach8ng peak maturity for a CB. It is perfectly feasible for him to have significantly improved. I believe he has. We’ve had a pretty good return for the £3m fee we paid imo.

I really don’t see how the loss of Bawful has made us weaker. However much skill and talent he possesses he is not a team player - and he’s a complete fruit loop. I’d be happy to see Sims step up, but if the club bring in a direct replacement, then so be it.

Bear in mind, in three seasons for West Ham he's managed 76 appearances in all comps, marginally more than Charlie Austin over the same period. Does have an impact when he plays though.
