Russia has hundreds of thousands of 'orphans' already, most of whom have been rejected by their parents. If its true its probably part of Putin's plan to blackmail Ukraine and to stop them growing up with fancy ideas of democracy and independence.

Yep. Even in the best most disciplined armies you will always get instances like this in war. The difference is that Ukraine fesses up and does something about it. The Russians actively encourage it as a weapon of terror then deny deny deny and blame someone else.

Indeed, and geographically sandwiched between Russia and China too. I was really surprised to see last week they have held meetings with both the UK and US on closer ties and co-operation https://thediplomat.com/2022/04/kazakhstan-diplomatic-blitz-in-europe-amid-war-in-ukraine/

Sorry but most of that is nonsense. Renewables have helped slow / reduce the UKs demand for imported gas and mitigate the effects of the current high prices. The real reason for Europe's reliance on imported gas is that it is generally much cheaper than the alternatives like nuclear. Britain took the cheapest option as always and ignored security of supply - much as we are now doing with food. France took a different approach and has seen minimal price rises. The deregulated gas market in the UK led to the horde of new energy companies competing only on price - which meant buying cheap on the spot markets as opposed to signing long term fixed price contracts. Spot prices are driven primarily by sentiment - as soon as you get some turbulence from something like covid or political tensions the price goes up and our super duper deregulated market collapses.

I wonder ow long Chinese memories are..... "Everything south of the Nerchinsk Line from 1689 is stolen Chinese land. In the Treaty of Aigun (1858), Russia stole everything up to the Amur River (in yellow). In the Peking Treaty (1860), they stole all the land east of the Ussuri River (in red)." https://twitter.com/visegrad24/status/1508937677789409285/photo/1

They mean nukes - that's how far gone they are. I mean it's (hopefully) still a minority view, but one Putin does nothing to rein in and probably encourages.

I read that the other day ( i occasionally look at Russian sites to see what they're saying). We've moved beyond Godwin's law in that you can now not only legitimately compare part of Russian society to the Nazis, but in fact they've gone beyond them. The Nazis 'only' killed defined minorities. This section of Russia wants to kill anybody who wants to be a citizen of an independent Ukrainian. Mainstream tv presenters openly talk about wiping out Ukraine and Poland and the Baltics, cleaning up Europe then obliterating the US. Its gone full on Loony Tunes. I don't know what the solution is - but unless Putin and his regime is toppled soon AND is replaced by somebody who isnt a clone, or the Russian economy totally implodes then I think we are going to have to fight - either this year or next.

No idea how accurate this is - but if even close it shows the inadequacy of western supplies of major arms to Ukraine.

We are definitely edging closer to it. NATO countries are doing a lot of things under the table and dont want them publicly announced. For example both the Czech Republic and Poland have agreed to repair damaged or broken down Ukrainian military equipment ay workshops and factories in their countries. Arguably that makes them more likely to be targets. Probably not a full on declared war but clashes and special forces deployed, ultimately with the aim of showing Putin he can't win. The big question is how much of Ukraine, if any, Putin gets to keep and whether there are any Russian (or channeled through China) funds to rebuild

Who rapes a 3 year old and piles her body, hands tied, on top of her families? Who burns four raped women? I used to think the Russian atrocities in Germany were the product of five years of brutal war where people had lost their humanity. This happened a couple of weeks into an invasion they started. https://twitter.com/Mariana_Betsa/status/1510966912724963328?s=20&t=RqKar0mLH3xtVVxGFIe-jg

Agreed. The irony is that many of the parts for Russian arms were made in Ukraine and they aren't too keen to supply atm - so its yet another example of psychopathy meets piss poor planning.
  16. I cant recall the exact figures but covid definitely kicked us off the ever increasing carbon emissions trendline. They didnt reduce but did flatten.
  17. We will likely always need some proportion of nuclear or some other backup but there is no reason renewables can't supply 90% of our needs 90% of the time. There are lots of fixes we can use - including making hydrogen and oxygen using renewables electricity when its plentiful - which essentially turning of the moment energy into a storable form; dynamic demand and management and battery storage like this https://www.energylivenews.com/2022/01/26/amp-energy-gets-green-light-for-800mw-battery-projects-in-scotland/

Thats true for both sides though. Russia's supplies seem to be low already
  19. Didnt the IRA blow up a terminal once - but they just split the tank and the fuel gushed out without igniting. There is a certain knack to it apparently.

I had a Russian gf 20 years ago and we're still in touch. She wanted to get married to a westerner. Her reasoning was that most Russian men are animals "because we had too many wars and too many dictators. All the good men died and all the cheats and liars and thieves survived". I thought it was a bizarre thing to say at the time, but the more you get to know them....

There is a video of that whole road. Horrific. Not just one group of bodies but everywhere. There was once scene where five women were found naked and dead surrounded by tyres. The Russians appeared to be about to burn them before they were forced out
