Oh, if only they'd made films that followed the Aliens comics. They were awesome.

Hoisted up on your own petards, naysayers. I have a constructive suggestion. May I suggest that you give up supporting the current Saints team, and become fans of "historic Saints" instead? Just watch videos of previous victories where the outcome is known. Honestly, it's like watching kids who throw their toys out of the pram when things aren't going their way. Heaven forfend that you actually have to deal with any genuine adversity. +1 for making this a gold thread.

@ColinJb I picked up "Those Left Behind" this weekend. It's okay, but not what I'd call a classic. Some beautiful full page art of the major characters. @SuperMikey - I'm well into my comic books and know even bigger nerds than myself. Sandman - by our Portchester-born compatriot, Neil Gaiman. Stunningly good. Ultimate Spider-Man - Buffy-esque continuity free reboot of the Spider-Man universe. Strangers in Paradise - house-sharing with an assassin. Sanctuary - Japanese crime drama about a mob boss and a politician in cahoots to take over Japan. That should keep you busy for now.

It's handy to justify killing in the name of, but not much else. It annoys me that these beliefs sometimes come at the cost of innocent lives, though. One of the worst examples would be someone denying easily performable surgery to their kid, just because they believe that God will step into save them. I've worked with someone whose parents did just that.

1.80 miles PR Liverpool Football Club 2.40 miles PR Everton Football Club 4.85 miles L1 Tranmere Rovers Football Club 15.03 miles PR Wigan Athletic Football Club 20.25 miles PR Bolton Wanderers Football Club 26.86 miles PR Manchester United Football Club 27.00 miles CH Preston North End Football Club 27.64 miles CH Blackpool Football Club 28.68 miles PR Blackburn Rovers Football Club 28.95 miles L2 Bury Football Club Obviously a simple application of Pythagoras with as-the-crow-flies measurements. There's no way you could drive from Liverpool to Blackpool and only put 27 miles on your clock.

It's not exactly a surprise, is it? All of the religious books are quite limited in scope compared to what humanity has discovered in the interim ( things like dinosaurs, other stars and planets, etc ). To me, that says these books are the words of men who didn't understand the world, not a God who is supposed to have created it. Yet there are still believers who, for example, believe that the Bible is the literal word of God.

Heads up. New series of Down The Line is back on Radio 4 in about 12 minutes. For the uninitiated, it's a spoof phone-in show (the Beeb originally pretended it was real) starring various alumni from the Fast Show. Snippet here on YouTube :-

So, has anybody been watching this? I've seen both episodes so far. Very good program which turns the mundane ( gold wedding rings ) into the extraordinary. And although one of my FB friends is somewhat dismissive of Professor Brian Cox ( "The only Wonder of the Universe is how that c**t got on telly" ), I've actually got past the potential pretentious factor. Genuinely think he's interested and excited about the Universe we live in. Mind you, the Ms Pap did point out that he gets to travel to a lot of far-flung Earth-bound locations on the BBC's budget

I'll be voting yes. It's not all the way there, but it is a start. It can't be right that your elected representative goes into power without a majority mandate to do so. As for the BNP getting more of a look-in, won't happen with AV. Perfectly possible under say, the party list system or STV ( as we saw in the Euro elections ). AV is the first logical step to representatives that actually reflect the will of the electorate.

Could you ask him if he would sleep with this :- If he was guaranteed a roll in the sack with this :- afterward?

Good result. A small shame that Huddersfield picked up a win. I honestly don't think Brighton will be caught now. All about the 2nd promotion place. With this result, and the six-pointer at Dean Court, that's well within our reach - especially as we seem rather adept at putting little runs together.

We'd probably find something there. Mars, presuming it was present, would have been in the goldilocks zone in the earlier stages of the Sun's life.

Frankly, the way he managed to get out of this, a technicality that prevents retroactive punishment if the official saw the foul, suggests to me that the referee was either incompetent or knew exactly what he was doing.

Think it'll be hard at the first time of asking, although we do have a number of things in our favour :- 1) Adkins knows the division 2) We already have a number of players who have done well at that level 3) Resources, plus access to players who don't see L1 as an option 4) In the first half of the season, being an unknown quantity. However, it'll be tough enough to get out of L1 this year.

Well, by paradigm shift, I simply mean that one idea can change our understanding of everything, leading to massive leaps everywhere. Tesla's alternating current is a case in point, literally paving the way for the modern age.

According to this, it is unlikely. However, he should be banned for that. If it had been a player from a lowly team, he'd have been off in a heartbeat.

Interesting stuff. Of course, much of the speculation about the likelihood of ever meeting our extra-terrestrial neighbours is rooted in special relativity, much as most scientific thought before SR relied on Newtonian physics. I'm not a physicist, so don't really know the details. However, Nikola Tesla didn't go for special relativity - and the scientific community is busy trying to fill the gaps. Also, history has shown that one paradigm shift can have massive consequences. We may be a lot closer to meeting our neighbours than we think, and the speed of light may not be relevant.

Putting the local government job "cuts" into perspective

How about 20% corporation tax, like the rest of us pay? -
Das Boot is an astoundingly good film. It is incredibly tense, yet the characters are real enough that you forget which side of the war they were on. You root for them from the first ten minutes. The films genius is its portrayal of ordinary men in extraordinary times. There are numerous versions out there. I caught a 4 1/2 version while on a ferry trip. Take a day off and watch the longest version you can. Downfall, mentioned here before, will haunt you. Where Das Boot features normal men on the front line, Downfall represents a snapshot of the inner circle of the Nazi movement at the point it all falls apart. No jumps, no shocks, yet terrifying on a small scale. Moving away from movies, watch Band of Brothers. And, as a couple of posters have mentioned before, check out the stuff that relates to the Pacific conflict. Finally, if you are into this time period, read The Road To War. Very concise book - each chapter represents the stuff that was going on in the lead up to WW2 in the respective countries that particpated in it.

Every time I've seen Jaidi, I've liked him. Seems to be under every ball. If I were Nige, I'd be saying "he still has a job to do for this football club"

And er, just in case anyone mistakes my meaning here, the actions of the Libyan government are utterly deplorable, with or without Western interference.

tbh, the whole wave of nascent revolutions in the Middle East and North Africa smack tremendously of the sort of state-changing antics Western intelligence services got up to in the days of the Cold War and beyond. If these states do undergo internal change, some of the deals that their leaders have struck with China may now be up for grabs. Sorry to get all classical on a Footy Forum, but Qui Bono?

For the sake of greater accuracy, 'we' (meaning the elected Govt of the day) wanted the Scots to do it all along, but didn't want to be accountable. The Scots were simply pawns in a bigger game - either pressured or tricked via reverse psychology to make the ruling they did. Devolution is great, isn't it?

Thirded. I spent a lot of time in NI. The best thing they can do to make the peace process last is to abolish denominational schools. I know a Protestant bloke who claims he didn't meet any Catholics until he was 27.

Gambling addiction will ruin your life. A couple of quid on a football accumulator gives Saturdays a bit of extra spice. As in all things, moderation is key.
