Or it was for Russian state TV to soften Putin up before the next talks, and then break the Russian position down further without Putin losing loads of face, because he is holding on at home. The one thing about this regime is that it is unpredictable but I think they are also trying to reel Putin and Russia in a bit as well. Don’t get me wrong, the optics were horrific, but I’ve a gut feeling it was a bit confected. Trump knows Putin doesn’t like losing face, so he wouldn’t do it in public to him, but behind the scenes there might be less filter.
